EXEO ST - European press release

The new SEAT Exeo ST will be available in the (European) dealership network by the last week of June. ( As above expected in the UK market towards the end of the year).

• New family style body for those seeking greater space and practicality
• New BOSE sound system and new WIV variable maintenance system
• Available in five engine choices – three petrol and two common rail Diesel

The Spanish brand’s sporty SEAT Exeo sedan range has been extended with the arrival on the market of the estate ST version, a tremendously functional car that combines luxury, comfort and spaciousness with the traditional sporty philosophy that characterises all SEAT models.

The new Exeo ST goes one step further in terms of practicality and interior functionality. With its family size body styling and new rear hatch, load capacity has been greatly increased and loading itself is much easier. Furthermore, with the launch of the ST, the Exeo range has even more equipment, and new systems that improve on-board safety and comfort, strengthening the position of SEAT’s new model within the B segment of mid-sized sedans.

One of the main novelties added to the equipment line-up of the Exeo range is the BOSE sound system with 10 precision speakers that guarantee unbeatable acoustics within the passenger compartment to round off an attractive offer that includes several infotainment systems. Another outstanding element found on the Exeo is the WIV variable maintenance system, which considerably lengthens the time between service appointments and informs the driver on the distance remaining before the next visit.

The new Exeo ST looks very similar to the four-door sedan version. The only differences lay in the length of the body, which is 4.666 metres long, and the boot volume, of 442 litres, with increased load capacity when the rear seats are folded. Other elements that identify the new family version are the roof rails, which are handy for transporting bulkier items.

The new SEAT Exeo ST will initially be available with three petrol engines – the 102 hp 1.6, 150 hp 1.8 and 200 hp 2.0 TSI, and two Diesel choices – the 143 and 170 hp 2.0 units (the 120 hp version will be ready in September) equipped with DPF particulate filter and common rail technology. They are all mated to a six-speed manual gearbox that fully complies with EU5 emissions legislation coming into effect in 2011.

Extensive equipment line-up

The SEAT Exeo ST is available in three trim levels – Reference, Style and Sport.

Right from the entry-level Reference version, the range is available with 7 airbags as standard, with the option of including two rear chest airbags. Other standard equipment on Reference includes dual zone climate control, ABS + TCS, ESP with EBA emergency braking, passenger airbag disconnection, driver seatbelt warning, WIV variable maintenance system, optimised headrests, efficient gear shift indicator (except with the 102 hp 1.6 engine), 205/55 tyres on 16 inch steel rims, trip computer, front and rear power windows, electric heated door mirrors, roof rails, body colour side mouldings, sport suspension, foglights, remote controlled central locking, storage drawers beneath the front seats, roll-up parcel shelf, split folding rear seat, glove compartment light, front and rear reading lights, MP3 CD radio with aux-in, four speakers and Isofix anchoring points on the passenger and rear window seats with Top Tether, among others.

The Style versions build on Reference equipment with the following elements: height adjustable passenger seat, front seats with lumbar support, cruise control, lighting package, smoker’s package, chrome roof rails, park position door mirrors, chrome roof rails, rear parking sensor, rain sensing wipers, automatic lights on, anti-dazzle rear-view mirror, acoustic protection windscreen, windscreen with green anti-glare stripe, Coming Home, front /rear armrest with compartment + 2 cupholders, chrome window frames + glossy B/C pillars + aluminium inserts on interior door sills, cooler in glove compartment, leather steering wheel and gearknob, rope net cargo area separator, steering wheel controls, 4 additional speakers, volumetric alarm with tilt sensor, low tyre pressure warning and 205/55 tyres on 16” alloy rims.

The Sport trim builds on the entry-level version equipment with dark glass, sport seats, height adjustable passenger seat, front seats with lumbar support, cruise control, front /rear armrest with compartment + 2 cupholders, smoker’s package, leather steering wheel and gearknob, steering wheel controls, 4 additional speakers, volumetric alarm with tilt sensor, sporty door moulding, low tyre pressure warning and 225/45 tyres on 17” alloy rims.

The SEAT Exeo ST features a long list of optional equipment that significantly increases onboard comfort and safety.

The new car comes with such interesting options as the special Convenience (on Reference), Style Plus (on Style) and Sport Plus (on Sport) packages. The first one features multi-function steering wheel, cruise control, Bluetooth, manual driver and passenger seat height adjustment and front central armrest, while the second includes 17 inch light alloy rims, interior wood inserts, dual xenon headlights + AFS, headlight washers, daytime driving lights with assistant, Coming Home and Bluetooth.

I think the Exeo project is to get them into the larger family car and more over fleet markets as cheaply as possible.

I don't think at this stage a Cupra is in their development sights for the Exeo.

Very much like the ST version, and notice a lot of the photos are taken looking at its rear end.....

Then you see it's face :help:

Bit of a case of don't look at the mantlepiece while you're stoking the fire. Shame as so many of the other new SEAT car front ends aren't too bad, but on this is looks dated before its released. A car which may well be bought with the head, not with the heart.

True, I guess if they can get a big fleet order and raise awareness like Skoda then maybe bring out a MK2 or updated version later.

I think it was quite a savvy move by SEAT to use the old A4 tooling. R&D development costs then tooling and production line costs for a new model are extremely expensive.

To effectively take a successful car like the A4 and transport the whole production line to Spain to give them a toe-hold into an as yet unexplored market for the brand is a good move financially.

Fleet sales are where I can see the Exeo doing well, even if it's out-dated compared to the current crop of sales/lower managment sector brands like Ford and Renault. Buyers are getting a middle to upper management product for the same kind of money.

For the average family buyer, there is always the shroud of a used Audi A4 hanging over the Exeo but a used or nearly new Exeo may well be a value for money carrot that's worth giving a second look at.

Great selling point of the Exeo over the older A4 is full dealer warranty and plenty of tech as standard in the interior. Will be a very nice place to sit.

If they stick the V8 in I'm sold... but otherwise for someone not desperate for a new car an A4 makes more sense IMO.

Kind of moot point really, because even if they stuck a V8 in it, people would still get the S4.

But I don't believe they have any intention of pointing this car at people that would want V8 4WD executive cars anyway.

A used A4 does make sense if you want the 4 rings on the front, but from a financial point of view a used Exeo makes even more sense as it will likely have more options and already has a higher level of interior trim than a budget A4.

True, but then you're looking at a couple of years before a used Exeo is commonplace. And you can buy a lot of A4 second hand for £18k.

I think the main thing Seat will suffer with is the general lack of new car sales at the moment.

I know a lot of people that are buying cars at the minute, they're all in one of two camps.

One side are buying second hand, higher spec prestige makes, to try and keep better residuals.

The other camp are buying new compact cars ( Aigo, Yaris etc ) that they intend to run forever.

If Seat aren't selling new Exeos due to joining a saturated market ( if you look at the class they're moving into, there's lots of choice from better regarded marques. [ And before I get jumped on for that, generally a Ford is seen as better than Seat due to the name in all but the few who really know ] ) there wont be any second hand ones either

I'm not knocking that Seat are releasing a new car, far from it as it looks like a nice motor, but I just don't quite see how it makes sense at the moment. All my own opinion of course and I don't expect many to agree. :)

join the back of the line if that happened dude!! i noticed the release pics have a very audi-esque RS blue

seriously though, i doubt we will see a cupra/RS model, it looks like a good car to regain old toledo customers and try and net some bmw/audi swappers too

quite like it myself but saving for a bocanegra

The A4 was recently marked as one the the fastest depreciating car's on the market and that was before the credit crunch bit. So anyone with any sense would certainly not be considering a new one.

I believe recycling a successful product and rebranding it into a cheaper market segment is a far better use of the companies finances in this turbulent time. The lower production costs, less R&D as I outlined earlier all mean they are taking less of a hit on each one built which means they can be much keener on price than their rivals. Not to mention cheaper to produce parts etc.

I don't think a brand new Exeo makes such a sound investment for an individual, but from a company fleet buyers point of view it should make good finacial sense. Bulk orders on cost effective good quality products.

This market is a dangerous place to be for a smaller company such as SEAT that have invested a lot of R&D money into an all new product. Makes sense they can dip their toe into the sector with a high quality product at a bargain price.

I expect they will depreciate just as badly as A4's do, in turn that will make them an even better used buy. However I think they will also have a lot of movement in the prices of new-ones as the competition is so tough.

One potentially large market for these would be with the Police. Think about how the Octavia has crept up there from nothing to be one of the biggest sellers for medium size area cars and VRs unmarkeds.

Most plod I know always favour the biggest car they can get for comfort, load carrying and crash resistance. However to keep costs down the forces are downsizing and they need increasingly good handling for ARV and response work. There are very few pure motorway cruisers anymore.

Volvo V70s are not nimble or reliable enough and getting too pricey. Many traffic units are replacing them. BMW 5 series diesels run well but are so expensive that 3 series are now the main buy. Mondeos are larger than ever and heading upmarket as is the Signum

Exeo ST particularly with a TDi engine would give them A4 size, handling and on well proven and reliable underpinnings with performance upgrades easily available at a very competitive price. One that could keep the fleet managers and the plods happy as they shouldn't give a toss about the badge on the front.

Bet you the Spanish Guardia Civil will buy thousands and if their feedback is good then this time next year watch this space :cop:
