Personally I think for the best part the RAC warranties and stuff are crap, they don't cover wear and tear failure just unexpected failure. They are also awkward to deal with, have set limits on labour rates and like the job done as cheaply as poss instead of properly.

Do they cover the clutch going through wear? or just if a slave/master cylinder fails.

You need to ask yourself if the cost is worth the benefits or whether to brave it. Personally I wouldnt but I have the facility to fix it myself at present so it wouldnt be as cost effective.

have a look at 'which' 'auto trader' and 'the times' lots of informed write ups. some after sale warranties are poor, some are very good.

my dad has, (i'm still in manufactur warranty but will be taking out an after sales policy as soon as that finishes) i'll find out who, however he has found them very easy to deal with in the past, not like insurance companies or anything. really just a case of "will it cover what i want it to cover... i.e. (what i'm expecting to fail etc etc)" and then see if you can afford it really!! i think its warranties direct that auto trader recommends and i've heard good things about them

i look them up, it just sounds a good idea to have the expensive parts covered if they fail

Any warranty is worth having if it covers the stuff which you know goes wrong with your particular car. Speaking as a dealer, examples I have come across include -
noisy wheel bearing not covered - car recovered in with failed wheel bearing covered
cam sensor not covered unless extra 'fuel system' cover paid for
water ingress rarely covered
electrical wiring faults rarely covered - only specific component failure
heating controls not covered - take note climatronic drivers!!!
clutch only covered to certain mileage
I could go on but you get the idea!!!!!!
Just remember one claim paid out may well pay back your policy cost many times over . . . . . .

i just bought an R225 trwo weeks ago an i insisted that the garage put on a years AA "total cover" premium warranty., looking over the small print it looks as though it does cover everything. a bit pricey though i think.

cheers

its awesome mate, the best car choice i have ever made, its the second time i haave had one of these engines but what they have done to it in the R is amazing. its so quick makes an awesome sound and more often than not sticks like poo to a blanket.

if you ever get the chance to by a good one.......do it. dont be tempted by the cheap crappy ones out there save the money and you wont be disapointed.

cheers

I had taken out the AA prestige warranty and rang them the other day about some issues i have...

the answer was...

Cooling fans issue... Covered
Door seals... Not covered
Door lock not working... not covered
lightswitch defective... not covered
Coolant level sensor... not covered

So in all, it will only cover major componets like the fans

after these are done, it gets cancelled

PS diagnostic time is not paid either

but if the gearbox drops out or the clutch explodes then it would be all worth it then wouldn't it

Thats the nail hit on the head.
The word 'warranty' leads most people to believe that everything is covered, mainly because it is a word associated most with new cars where most things ARE actually covered.
Think of it more as an insurance policy on the major parts of your used car - it will probably cover a lot less than you expect it to but its a safeguard against big stuff going bang.
You take out house insurance knowing only certain things are covered, you probably pay out mobile phone insurance, boiler cover etc etc
Against the cost of your car, the warranty is a small percentage and its classic 'buyer beware'. Make as sure as you can that the car is actually a good 'un before you buy it, then have the warranty in place as a safeguard. You may have claims turned down, but even one approved will probably repay you your premium in a bill saved.
Even on new cars, warranty isnt as comprehensive as you would like. Its European law that every new car must have a 2 year factory warranty, its the UK importer who pays for our 3rd 'bonus' year which is why the cover reduces in year 3. Even in years 1 and 2 some things stop being covered after certain mileages and time limits - they become adjustments and wear & tear therefore chargeable. My Leon has 12k done in a year but I know my noisy brakes wont be covered, nor will my wiper blades and washer jets.
