or you could use a screw driver to get the letters off, a piece of sandpaper to deal with the adhesive, then a brillo pad to polish. Hth
best way i find is warm water (just between warm and hot) and a credit card. use brasso to get rid of the adhesive.

In short, an alternative way is WD40, use librally, wait for a minute or so, then plastic card and scrap off, clean up any messy gunk afterward with your fav solvent.
