312 Rear discs too big for Leon?

I picked up a full set of S3 2007 brakes on Ebay.

The fronts are the same as the Cupra setup...345mm so they are deffinatelly going on the car.

The rears are 312mm vented which is bigger than the cupra,s.

Are they too big?

Hi Jon!
I was thinking about this when you mentioned it the other day.
The 312's will fit on the rear if you got the calipers & carriers from the S3.

The other thing is that you'll need 18" wheels to clear the front brakes. Unless I'm talking bollox again!

Hey Jon i think you may be talking bollox again! He he

Im sure i have read on here somewhere that they will fit 17's. There is a photo on here of a cupra with a3 sport 17,s but i cant be 100% sure till i see it with my own eyes.

Now i have the rear discs, callipers, pads, and carriers and i assume they will bolt straight on.

Are they just Too Big for a Leon tho?

Im worried about the braking ballance as the back end of a Leon is a fair bit lighter than an S3. Under heavy braking will the back end be a bit twitchy? The front brakes are the same spec as the Cupra which is fine. Seat chose to fit 288mm to the rears on the Cupra. I would like to fit the S3 rear brakes but just a bit worried they will be too much for the car and upset the ballance when slamming on the anchors.:(

jon-tfsi. you've just upgraded the fronts to 345mm, yes? so your braking is mostly all on the front at the moment since the larger calipers and discs, so your braking has already been upset has it not? i would have though adding larger brakes on the back would have evened the braking out.

True!! I have thought that, but my standard rear discs are the same diameter as Cupra ones. Once fitted the fronts will be the same size as Cupra ones so that still leaves me in a pickle as to whether the 312mm rear brakes are too big.

Any opinions on this would be appreciated

To be honest, the rear brakes do next to bugger all in terms of braking anyway.

I would leave the standard rear set up on.

Not true, if you have big brakes up front and small brakes on the rear, you'll find the nose dives under heavy braking, put larger brakes on the rear and the braking force is evened out with less front end dive, the rear brakes do more than you think. They will be 312mm on the S3 for a reason.

I changed my Leon Mk1 rear brakes from 232mm solid discs to 300mm vented, grooved discs and only felt positive results.

I've had various brake upgrades on my previous cars & found the rears to benefit less than the front.

Maybe putting larger & vented discs on the rear will work better than solid discs.

Thanks for your replies guys. I got the fronts fitted first as the garage i got them fitted at didnt have the correct tool for fitting the rears, and noticed the improvement straight away even before the pads had bedded in.

I later had the 310mm rear disk setup fitted and now they have all bedded in the braking is amazing.
I did notice the front end diving quite a lot under heavy braking before upgrading the back brakes. My old pads were shot so this wont have helped much.

For anyone with the Cupra/S3/R32 front brakes or similar, considering upgrading the rears i would highly reccomend it!!!!

Also just to point out 17" wheels do fit over these brakes. The 17" Leon mk2 Sport alloys i have on mine needed 5mm spacers but the A3 Sport 17"alloys go straight on without spacers with an offset of ET56

just out of interest as i am considering bigger brakes on rear after i get my brembo's. How much was the rear set-up? i'm considering 286mm from cupra, but 312mm would be immense.

From the dealers they will be quite a lot of cash.
I picked mine up from ebay as a job lot front and back for 250 although i have seen them go for more than that.
The 310mm setup is on the S3 and R32 and they do come up for sale on ebay quite often on ebay and in breakers yards.
I may be wrong but dont you have 288 mm rear brakes already?

Nice one Jon!

I did notice the A3 alloys & thought you had problems with standard Sport alloys.
But then saw the spacers & standard alloys back on the other day. :)
The brakes do look nice.
Just upgraded my fronts to MKV Golf GTI brakes & they have made a big difference too.
Might do the rears later on.

Hi mate, just wondering if you want to sell me your old FR calliper (front driver's side) as I bolloxed mine up by painting it with hammerite in cold weather . . . ??
