Good searching my friend :funk:
Hmmm i might push window tinting further up my list of mods then atleast if it does happen the window will stay together  haha
Seriously though, thats mega unlucky but it sounds like it is pretty common.
I can only think that it would be some sort of thermal shock that has caused it then!
Maybe it was really cold then a bat did a really warm s**t on it and "BANG" :headhurt:

:( My rear window went without warning,a couple of years ago.
It was well iced up,so i put the heat element on.Was moving some stuff,so i left it on whilst i loaded up.
Just before i went to shut it,i heard a cracking noise,Because of the ice i couldn't see anything.Anyway,i closed it as normal.Went to lock up my house.Came back, and there's this fist sized hole, near the top right hand corner of the window. The guy from RAC Windscreens reckoned it was just a weakness in the glass. Never happened since.

i've heard a number of stories where small imperfections in the glass plus sudden cold and hot can shatter the glass

Damn sorry to hear this! Seen this happen on alot of vehicles when I worked at the airport, we thought it was to do with being parked up for such a long period and the noise of the runway next to us, but think its can just happen. Saw an Astra van it happened to first I thought someone had broken into it but then when we went to clear away the glass and but a bin bag over the window realised all the glass was on the outside and it had blown out.

i have an 06 ibiza, and this happened to me today. Presumed vandalism but as you say nothing has been stolen/nothing to be stolen and no signs of any vandalism. It sounds stupid but its as if heating the rear windscreen from freezing then it quickly cooling has caused it to smash... :S

I think its common on MK4 ibizas because of the way the window is designed.
I have heard of it happening on other cars but not as much as it seems to on our cars :(

Also windscreens are made in a different way than say a rear window as they obviously have to stand upto different things, so i dont think a windscreen would ever go in this way. Could you imagine the court case if someone was hurt by a windscreen exploding in there face!

I had mine go on a Mk4 Ibiza last winter.

Driving to work, just turned off the rear screen about 1 minute previous, then a massive noise like a shotgun on the rear seat. Look in the mirror to see the rear screen sagging with a massive hole in the middle.

There definately wasn't any foul play involved (like a shotgun) its just an expansion issue and poor design.

Not used the heated function since, as it cost me a years NCB (well, cost me getting an additional year) as I claimed for it. (although thinking about it now I have protected ncb, but perhaps that protects from losing any).

Fricking loud and scary noise when it happened, I know a few people who would have needed to wash their underwear!
