Exhaust Questions.

Hi.

I have seen a few people with TDI's that have had the cat removed. So i thought about getting mine done and taking it to a custom exhaust place near where i live. Can they just cut the cat out and weld a pipe section in there?.

Does removing the CAT still make the car pass the MOT, And is there any noticeble gains in power apart from less lag?.

Last question. Could i keep my whole exhuast system standard, And have a exhaust tip welded on? Abit like the Cupra R version. I dont want to make it any noiser, Just make it look alittle better at the rear, And buying a new valance.

Thanks for taking time to look.

Its illegal for my petrol so i guess it is for you too, u can have a sports cat fitted but they can be quite expensive, would also be very smokey without a cat i believe. I guess in theory you could have a new tip because the custom place i went to you chose the tip they welded on

Why would no cat make it smokey, cars that were made before cats were mandatory were not smokey

Removing your cat would mean that your car would fail the emissions part of the MOT

Wrong....

Diesels do NOT need a catalyst and WILL NOT fail an MOT without a catalyst. Diesels are NOT done on emissions - they're done on the amount of soot on tickover I believe (i.e. if it's belching out black smoke on tickover - it'll fail).

Mine has been through MOT's without a catalyst and passed.

Although removing the catalyst WILL make the car smoke AND smell more. How much all depends on the power of your car etc etc. Mine is really quite smokey but I am pushing the standard turbo a bit....

And if you dont want any noise difference, why remove the cat? Removing the catalyst will make your exhaust tone louder.

Sorry, I didn't read the OP correctly, I thought it was a petrol he was on about.

Not WRONG, just not quite on the right track :)

Haha! If that's how you want to word it! :D Just thought I'd clear it up anyway as there's been loads of threads on this and just wanted to clear it all up so when people use the search.....*cough cough* it'll come up! :D

Bugger knew i bought the wrong car!.

So MOT time is fine with removing the cat which is good.

The car is getting mapped middle of this month, Apart from that shes standard, Am not to fussed on it being alittle more smokey as long as it doesnt flow out the back like a good'en.

How much more noise will removing the CAT make, Am abit of a bugger for having a quite car.

Thanks

I dont know with standard exhaust silencers tbh! Probably not all that much. Will just be a bit more grunty. :) It'll be nice sounding anyway so dont worry! :D

Why do you want to remove the cat? You have no reason to?

You can just get a new exhaust tip on your car, for like £50

I was told it helps with less lag and helps the turbo out. Anything for abit more power.

Luke

Anything for abit more power, other than a full exhaust with no restrictions which would help the turbo out more and abit more power? ;) Honestly mate, if you dont intend to do more work in the future, and would be happy with just 180bhp, just get a tip

A remap will be fine for me, Dont wanna standard spending to much on the car TBH, Dont really keep my cars long.

Thanks for the advice.
