its fine to turn the engine over if the cambelts gone. The pistons will have bent the valves outa the way the instant it snapped. Just think about it, if anything were still in the way of the bottom end, the car wouldnt have just lost power and costed to a stop, the wheels would have locked solid as the vehicle was in gear !

I'd have thought even if the AA man had suspected the the cam belt had snaped then he would'nt have tryed to turn it over cos that could of done more damage.
My mate had a MK1 Clio, when his cam belt snaped the engine turned itself off to prevent any damage, he then called a recovery man who then turned it over and screwed the engine

Had the cam-belt in my Mondeo TDI go on the A1 a few years back - called recovery service first thing he did was try turning it over before looking under engine and seeing the 2 ends of the cam-belt poking out under the cam-belt cover

70mph on the motorway and the belt goes the bottom internals are still banging away, all the damage is done then imho.

That's about what I paid to have my Mondeo fixed after the cambelt went at the local garage that does all my car work

Is that before they have stripped it down?

I paid £350 for mine on my old 16v car that lost 5 valves.I used a mobile mechanic.
It's the garage labour that's the killer for you

Damn - mine I got a quote of £600-£1200 depending on what they saw when the stripped it down - think the final price was £1050 and yeah, mostly labour

thats before they have even looked at it,they said they will replace all the valves incase it misfires if they only replace the ones that are gone.

just hope that when they take it to bits they don't find bent cams / cracked head (as well as bent valves)

once it's off & the cambelt is snapped, you shouldn't turn it over again, incase you embed some debris in the piston / cylinder - so that's another potential cost if that's happened.

Some will be totally undamaged, they are still sealed so it won't misfire if they don't replace them.
I think they just want to cover themselves on that one tbh.

Hi, i have just been reading through your thread.

. We are a well established garage for over 40 years now. We all have VAG cars ourself and myself a cupra r. we specialise in servicing/mots repairs and diagnostics. We could beat your quote of 1100 by quite a bit if there is no damage to the pistons. A timing belt kit change, full head gasket set, changing all 20v and cylinder head de coked new valve steam seals fitted, oil and filter change.

as you are aware that its a bit of a blind job untill you actually remove the cylinder head and take alook for yourself what damage is done. the price for this would be £800 inc vat labour parts. normally its just a case of a few bent valves and quite rare piston and cam damage normally just bent valves. feel free to ring us on >>>>>>at any time.

I had the same in Pug 406 HDi and it was as if i had run out of fuel. The engine seemed to have no power and my speed was slowly decreasing. I was doing about 90mph at the time. Turned out the fuel pump (driven by the cam belt) had seized which ripped the belt off.

The valves were punched back up into the head, which broke all the followers. This was considered lucky as this released any pressure on the valves to push back downwards, so the valve springs kept them "safely" up in the head away from the pistons.

Take off the £600 for the fuel pump (yes... that was £600) and the rest of it cost £700 parts labour for valves, followers, gasket set, head bolts, belt, tensioner, waterpump, bottom pulley.

AA didn't try and start mine as I had already spotted the belt hanging down as most of the belt cover had been smashed off in the forces occuring underneath, although I did not hear a thing when it happened.

i dropped a valve on my old mk4 1.8t golf.. did'nt utter a noise at all.. just stopped and ign lights came on. internally it was carnage.. valve thru piston, debris on all the others, turbo lost bits off its blades.. and not a noise.
