all looks good mate :)

just a word of warning, i had no luck with those 3 bolt flanges. I couldnt keep them bolted together...i was under the car every 2 weeks re-doing them. hence why im going v-band now.

looks like you made a nice job of the cat, well done

Thanks for the tip. I'll check them after a few days. The downpipe bolts were okay when I came to remove them. The bolt heads and nuts have serrated faces to stop loosening. For the new joint I added some anti vibration washers.
Have you tried "nord-lock" washers, they are amasing. They are a double washer system with teeth facing each other. Never loosen. I'll go for these next if I have to.

what fasteners?
mine stay fixed without problems ever.
locnuts used, stainless bolts

'hint' if making your own, when welding the things together you can setback the pipe in the one flange, and stick out slightly in the other so you create a small socket fit as well as a butt fit flange to flange

:)

Thanks for the tip about making a socket system. I'll remember that for next time.

h17och, seriously consider nordlock washers. They never come loose.

Right, back to it.

Been under the car again to sort the exhaust out. Bolted up the revised downpipe and cat, which fitted just perfect.

Centre section and mount. Found it easier to just remove the whole thing.

Then onto the back box. I bought a Jetex cat back system designed for a MK4 Golf GTI, so I knew the rear valance would need cutting. I went for a Golf system as I think A3 systems sit a bit too low. I didn't want the discreet tailpipes as I've hear they can drone a bit.

Before cutting

Pretty straight forward stuff. Also trimmed the lower plastic part of the bumper to fit. Here are the finished pics.

Looks okay I think. Really chuffed how quiet it is as well. I'm expecting the noise to increase very slightly as I've found it to be the case in the past.
I'll upload a vid of the sound in a while.

It's ready for mapping now. I'm out of the country again most likely next week, so again it will have to wait, but I'll update when it's done of course.

HTC's nordloc suggestion is a good one if you have the space on the flange to tube OD to accomodate them.

Steel-loc nuts dont come undone (even when you want them to) especially when combined with a nordloc washer

Just trial fitted the 3" MAF I will be using. Cut some silicone reducers to size. Nothing too taxing.

FINALLY THE CAR IS READY FOR MAPPING!! About time :)

I have a few more things to add in the handling department now. The car feelings really loose at the moment. I suspect alot of that is down to the front wishbones which have dead poly bushes and the steering rack that has some play in it also. I will be removing the poly bushes and replacing them with Audi TT/S3 solid rubber mounts.
Picked up a set of Eibach ARBs as well after hearing how my people recommend them. There is way too much understeer at the moment, so adding a rear bar will improve the diagonal weight transfer keeping the front wheels more enenly balanced......thats the plan anyway.

For you A3/MK4 Golf/Leon guys, if removing the subframe you can fit TT/S3 subframe mounts which are tougher than A3 items. They are a two peice design and have much more metal in them. Every little bit helps.

Quick update. I dropped my car off at JBS today for a phase 3 remap. Should be picking it up on Thursday. Fingers crossed all the spanner time pays off.

I paid a deposit a few weeks back to secure the 30% discount. I'm planning to do a total of everything once I have the bill, so not sure yet.

They mentioned 3 days for the map on the phone. I said I'd leave it with them for 4 as I'm having the brake fluid changed while its there (I hate bleeding brakes).

Good project there mate and some lovely work with your cat.

Was wondering if the Jetex has got any noisier or quieter yet?

It got noisier, not by much, but a little. Also the tailpipes started to rattle. There is a little sleeve inside pipe that started moving about. I've hacked of about 3mm of the end and sorted the rattle now. They have a straight slash cut currently.

I would have taken it back, but it was a freebie.

I'm planning to take a few more vids when I get it back.
