It`s called limp mode when your ECU basically shuts down for safty reasons. Something is wrong with the running of your engine. Best get somebody with VAGCOM to have a look at it. Has it been remapped ?

a scanner should pick the fault code if its logged one but it wont mean anything unless you can find what it means

That definately sounds like limp mode...but as it's a TDI aren't you at around 4750rpm in 4th gear at 100mph? If so thats why it's going into limp mode! You're revving it too high. I had the same problem with my old ibiza FR, just don't redline it in the higher gears.

Rubbish :)

I can rev my car to 5K and it doesn't go into limp mode. All the car should do it hit the rev limiter.

cheers every 1 my bro has got a scanner i will plug that in first and c what it brings up. if tha dont work i think i will have to go to someone with a more complex 1.
i thaught i shud be able to rev it all the way up to the limiter cheers jonjay dident think it would be to over reving.
once i turned the car off and back on again i tried it again and it was fine the second time. but the same thing has happend twice so something aint qute right there

Beat me to it! 100 in 4th in a derv sounds like engine popping time to me!! (is it true there's no rev limiter on the derv's?) my LC (petrol) doesn't do much more than 100 in 4th I think and mine (mapped) revs to 7k.....

Sounds like limp mode too, however doing that speed in 4th shouldn't cause it unless you do it for miles and miles and one of the sensors decides you've been too bad for too long. Mine doesn't do that in any of the lower gears on the daily thrash and it goes to the redline in all of them. It will do around 100mph in 4th but that was on a private road and as soon as you reach that speed it's time for 5th anyway - no point in holding it there in 4th.

Indeed...i ideally change at 4.5k anyway as the torque tends to tail off around then.

Get the car checked out mate.

lol yer i bet it is in 3rd gear you can get around a 100.
yer i will get the car checked i think. its not that i want to hit tha kind of speeds in 4th all the time its just the fact that i dnt want anything wrong with the car and now i know it does this i will want to sort it out.
i know i should change b 4 i hit these revs thats not what my question is. but now i know that it aint something that should be happening i will have 2 get it cheked propily.

just an update on this. my bro pluged it into his diagnostics thing and it braught up ....

Fault code (P0234) - Engine boost condition - Limit exeeded

This to me suggests that the prasure in the turbo has gone to high???
Does any 1 know wha this could mean and know wha could cause this. the turbo cut out with me again last nigh but this time it was between 45mph and 55mph but was in 4th gear again wether tha has something 2 do with it i dnt know allways seems to happen in 4th gear

dont know if the fr diesel has one, but would imagine it will, but it could be an acuator on the wastegate not opening to relieve the pressure in the turbo. i could be wrong.

Carmarthenshire, Wales.
Had the same problem on a Polo TDI 100 Sport the missus had before the Leon. Bought it in Listers, Neneaton and ragged it back to West Wales as it had a years warranty left (!) and the same was happening flat in 4th/5th gear at high revs (when I pulled off to try it on this disused airfield I came across of course!). Car always felt really quick, always wanted to spin up even in second in the dry but don't know if it was re-mapped as I couldn't get hold of the previous (1st) owner – apparently he part-ex’d it in for a new Golf GTI petrol turbo so obviously he enjoyed his power! Anyway, took it to the VW dealer, same code description – boost exceeded. They fitted a brand new turbo, but no change! As it had never happened with the missus I left it as it was. VW dealer reckoned it was the quickest Polo diesel they'd had in.....
No wastegate on modern variable vane turbos fitted to most diesels.
Don’t worry about revving it, they love it, keeps them clean & blows the soot out! Done a million miles in diesels in the last 15 years as part of my job, company owned vans & cars, death in every gear with no problems!! Unless you change down too early & buzz the motor, a healthy diesel engine will rev on the ‘governor’ all day long!

If you can get it past 80 in 3rd then your driving a different car to the rest of us! Just not possible as Jonjay says.
As for comparing the 3rd gear in a petrol to the 3rd gear in the TDI, your never going to get anywhere near the petrol. Different gear ratios and rev bands for both cars, so petrol will always acheive higher speeds in the same gear.

Hi fellas.... got exactly the same problem with my mk1 Cupra TDi.

What was the resolution to this problem in the end?

p.s. yes mine has been remapped...
