Diesel vs Petrol FR - Which is quickest?

I beat a Golf GTI off the mark yesterday in my TDI FR (first time i tried the Lauch Control thingy!!).... but i think i just got lucky to be honest.... wish i had one of those message LCD things in the back i could have put "How's it feel being beaten by a DIESEL!!!"

Wow, bet it flies off the mark!!

I suppose you wouldn't want to do that all the time, would it invalidate the warranty like M3 BMW if you did it excessively?

How are you getting on with the FR?

Not sure if Mk1 do it, bet someone on Mk1 forum would no though. I suppose you can do it as often as you want its not a ''button'' to press that would show up at Seat if there was a problem. I have only tried it once but it would be interesting to see how it effects a 0-60 sprint. i had 3/4 runs on a road my company is building a year or so back and had an average of about 7.25/7.5 so it MAY make it a bit quicker, not sure

The Leon FR diesel isnt really about the 0-60 sprint though its about a quiet country lane ahead and putting the car into 3rd. That gear was made by God himself !!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, to answer the main question well the petrol should get away faster but by 65/70 the diesel should close the gap as having driven both its about this speed when 3rd/4th in the diesel kick in. It is RAPID.

Final result = draw Petrol quicker off the line, diesel torque would then hunt it down, as long as it changes gear right i.e. no later than 4k, oh and 2 speeding fines

Leon FR TFSI
Top speed: 229
0-100 km/h (s): 7,3
80-120 km/h (5th) (s): 7,0
80-120 km/h (6th) (s): 8,9
0-1000m (s): 27,6

Leon FR TDI
Top speed: 214
0-100 km/h (s): 8,2
80-120 km/h (5th) (s): 8,2
80-120 km/h (6th) (s): 10,5
0-1000m (s): 29,3

I'm guessing most of you would've bet on the diesel to win in elasticity (80-120 km/h or ~50-75 mph), but as you can see petrol has a clear advantage also in that area.
 
I've never raced against an FR TFSI (owning the FR TDI myself) but it's clear that de TFSI simply has more power and therefore will be quicker in all ranges.

The TDI might "feel" quicker because of the high torque. Having said that, I beat most hot hatches in sprint since I had my engine remapped. It now pulls out 209 BHP on paper, probably some 220 when measured. And with that much power, you'll keep up with an untuned TFSI.

I'm not sure off the mark, I've not really launched it yet, but it does feel quite quick the odd time of given it a bit "extra welly"

In gear like for like the Tdi would be the quicker due to the torque doing its bit.

I gave a mate in his Meggy 225 a bit of a suprise on the M42 being in 4th ;) but then he passed me :(

Cant compare with the petrol Fr direcly, but I have 0-100 vids of my MKV Golf Gti (same engine) and my FR Tdi - and the petrol is definately quicker.

Having driven them both, the petrol is defo waaay quicker imo , but maybe when I drove them back to back I wasn`t used with driving a diesel and that didn`t help ! Diesels give you that 2000k punch which makes them feel quick, but with the revs of the petrol they win hands down, torque is great but you need revs and bhp as well ...

(I still bought the diesel though as it was plenty quick and fuel is £1.20 ltr up here !! )

I asked the question because Ive always wanted a gti, but due to high milage and price range i went for the FR TDI, but to behonest I dont think the FR TDI is much slower than the GTI (or the FR)..

But I agree, it is all about the ingear speed - I love those moments when your joining a motorway from a side slip, you put the foot down, and you actually over take and join infront of those coming along on the motorway..

I know what you mean, I came from an Astra vxr 2 cars ago, and nothing makes you smle as much a s a petrol turbo hot hatch !! The Fr Tdi is a great compramise though, I can hardly believe how little I am at the pumps now, and it still has plenty of go, and overtaking acceleration is stuning for a diesel, I would certainly reccomend one !!
