Its not common sense, he's not tested that vehicle to the correct standards which are laid down the same for every other tester. Its called being lazy and stupid. If he thought that the owner was going to put the blue sidelight bulbs back in after the test then he should advise.
That's one view. I feel the MOT rules are far too rigid. I'm sure we can agree that an MOT pass doesn't necessarily mean a 100% roadworthy car.
My friend is a motorcycle MOT tester. He said that he's no longer allowed to fail a bike for a nail in the rear tyre. How can that be safe?
What do you mean its not 100% roadworthy? Its been examined by someone who has been trained and has the relevant expierience and knows that its safe.
Oh yeah sorry you think that defects should be overlooked by MOT testers (sidelights)! I think you'll find that if they all did that then NO they would not be 100% roadworthy.
Why is'nt it safe for a nail in the tyre? You cant fail any vehicle at test for having a nail in a tyre. Tell your friend to advise the nail and he'll prob find that the owner of the bike will get it sorted.

No there is no way of preventing it. There where plans, when MOT Computerisation was being designed, to use the Smart Card of each tester at each emissions test but they still have not developed the program! and prob wont.
If 'some' test stations are passing vehicles when really they shoud fail they will have discplinary action taken against them. The emission print outs have to be kept for 3 months from the date of test and 2 copies are done, one goes to the customer and the other stay's at the garage.
Any intelligence would be nice biglad

I didn't say 'not 100% roadworthy', I said passing an MOT doesn't necessarily mean it's 100% roadworthy. There's no way an MOT tester can 'know' a car is safe based on an assessment of the points on an MOT list.

You really see no problem with having a nail in a tyre?! In my experience, many owners do not get it sorted as there's a cost involved, and they're not obliged to do so.
Just let me clear something up....my LED sidelights are not blue, they are pretty much the same colour as my HID's and they show up as white when the guy looked through the machine at them! ....they do look a little blue to the naked eye but no bluer than my HID's which I would like to mention are 6000k so if that is "bad testing" then perhaps those other people with 6000k HID's should have their cars failed!

The only data that is transmitted to VOSA is what the Tester puts into the VTS Device once he's finished. The emission's result does NOT get put in but the brake results DO.

The wording in the testers manual is that if any front (sidelight/headlight) bulb is more blue than white then it should be failed. So 6000k HIDs I would say where fine (not because I have them!
).
Which Toyota are you at? Not heard of Tipton Garage yet. I work for VOSA as a Vehicle Examiner.
Change the recirc valve first, you'll feel the difference straight away. If you only have a few quid at the moment go for the S2000 aerial change and mark 5 VW rear wiper arm and blade. Cheap and easy to do mods.
If your going for the HIDS like most people on here then get the 4300k as the 6000k in my opinion are a little to blue.
That's what I meant about common sense. A really picky tester may have failed the LED sidelights but this guy recognised it as a minor point. For the record, I despise blue sidelights as much as the next VOSA employee. Every other chav-wagon around here seems to have them fitted though. I don't even understand why people think they look good!
