Diesel Filter

Hi all,

I was looking through the records for my car the other day and realised that I hadn't changed the diesel filter for over 30k.

As I think it should be done at 20k (anyone confirm ?) I thought I had better change it.

So, GSF in Coventry, and twenty quid later I had a diesel filter..

Easy enough to remove, just two pipes with the usual clips and a pressure valve thingy connected to a couple more pipes which popped out the top.

I refitted the new filter, fitted the new 'O' rings on the presure valve thingy, but thought it best to refill with new diesel before connecting it up.

This I did, untill no more bubbles were seen coming to the top, then I reconnected everything.

Problem was, couldn't start the car afterwards, as air bubbles could be seen in the transparent pipe.

Finally got it fired up after about 3 minutes of continuous cranking, which felt really wrong.
Poor old starter motor, I hope it didn't suffer at all !!

So, my qusetion is, what did I do wrong, was this normal, and is there anything else I could of done to save all the cranking ?

Ta.

Yeah, thanks stew, it is running fine now..

It took nearly 3 mins of cranking to get it fired up though, I didn't like it one bit !

So, what did I do wrong, should I have fitted the filter 'dry' ?

Didn't have any problems changing the filter on My Ibiza or on the Passat, both fitted dry and started straight up...

its behind the screen wash the thing with four pipes coming out of it

They cost about £20 from the dealers got mine last week just waiting to fit it now... bit cold tho :(

anyone got any advise on fitting the fuel filter? and will it fill it when I turn the engine on or should I fill it up and then attach it?

From experience, rather than just firing the car up I find that if you turn the ignition on then wait about three or four seconds, turn off and do the same again about five times - this will feel fuel from the pump through to the filter and the car should pretty much fire up straight away.

Basically you might find the car starts then cuts out and takes a while to start again, this is because there is no fuel in the filter, or none of the fuel is filtered - I just fit mines 100% dry and do the above and never really have a problem.

o sorry must be diff on a beeza

Having been on the Mk2 Ibiza section, it was suggested that the filter is under the airbox or nearabouts that region. I will check this and then let other Mk2 owners know - for future reference!

Hi guys,

As promised a picture of a where the diesel filter is located on a mk2 TDI 90.

To get to the filter, you must slightly free the airbox by untying the bands that hold it to brackets on the chassis.

Cheers

Yep it sure is,

I will have a go at changing it tommorow. Is there any precautions i need to take when changing it - as i have heard of starting issues when changing these.

PS: i will change it dry (i.e. add no diesel in it)

Also, there are some clips (like jubilee clips) but they have this little square thing on them, how do i undo them and then re-apply?

Thanks

Pretty much just pull off the connections from the old one then remove from the bracket. Slide in the new one and put on the connections. I turn on ignition and wait for three seconds, turn off then repeat three times - just so it puts some fuel into the filter.

Normally your fine after that, it might not fire up properly first time but a couple of cycles normally sorts that out.

You can transfer some diesel over, but I've never done that - never had a problem either.

Hi,

My car has lots of air in the transparent pipe hardly any diesel coming through and will not run now. I have changed the fuel filter changed and still lots of air bubbles. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

You normally get bubbles in the transparent pipe.

Did it stop running before you changed the filter?
