Isn't it something like £30 for a diagnostic check at a dealers? (I don't live in the UK so don't know their prices!)

TBH that's £30 well spent if it shows up the fault, could save you weeks of head scratching & spending money on parts that don't actually need replacing.

it'll be either goodwill, or about £45 (30 mins labour)

or just get to someone with vagcom

the diagnostics on the mk2 is pretty crap though

i'll have ur engine off you :D
seriously though, just drive have a look under the car to see what the rattle is with the exhaust.
could simply be a loose heat shield, or a perished rubber bung/hanger.

if the exhaust is going, just grab a 2nd hand mk3 one. there's always a way forward.

good news, the daddy is back up and running, ht lead had pretty much snapped inside and was arking. this had shafted a plug.....

so as earlier mentioned i ordered new plugs and ht leads, paid for 24 hour delivery, 3 days on leads still havent arrived... plugs arrivied today after a weeks wait to find they were the incorrect ones. what annoyed me more was that i asked the bloke for the part number to be sure, but he said not to worry as he can assure me they are the correct ones.. to$$er......

at least he is running sweet again.....oh and also fitted the k&n air filter today.... noticed a reasonable amount of difference in performance and sound :D

thanks for all you guys and girls help :)

Good to hear that you got it fixed mate. I bet you weren't enjoying driving it etc when it had the problems. It isnt good driving a mis-firing car, had the problem myself.
