I'm a little confused about which oil to use on my 1.9 TDI Cupra. Checked it the other day and after nearly 6000 miles on the clock, it is at the minimum level.

I went to Seat dealers and told them which model etc and they said they didnt have the PD stuff but the VAG 'Special Plus' stuff is the same anyway. It is 502 00 / 505 00 / 505 01. Just checked the manual and at the back it says only use 506 01 or 507 00 on the 160 engine :S

Would the Special Plus stuff be ok for a top up? I just got a litre for £15 which I think is enough?

505.01 is pd oil, just not the right weight for your engine.

505.01 oil - 5w 40 weight is better than no oil at all, but ideally you want 506.01 - 0w 30 or 507.00 - 5w 30 oil. If you can get some locally then do so, Halfords stock it (Castrol Edge) but make sure it's the red stuff above. In the absence of that, then top up with the stuff you have to save your engine and take oilman up on those links.

If you're near me, I have a litre in the garage you can buy.:)

Cheers guys, I will try Halfords for the Castrol Edge stuff and take this stuff back for a refund. The dealer (Frosts in Shoreham) is pretty bad, really unhelpful and awful customer service anyway.

found today a 1ltr bottle of 505.01 (shell helix) in the boot, but no idea what was used for actual service.

Hhhmmm, Mobil 1 is good granted but by no means the best one of them, their prices reflects this by not being the best value for money.

When it comes to these kind of spec oils (VW50#.00 or BMW LL0# or GL LL025 etc), if it meets the spec it meets the spec. Stick to a major and you cant go wrong. When it comes to performance and race applications Mobil 1 is easily out classed by the more specialist oils.

Cheers

Guy.

The best oil is the one that meets the correct spec for your car, as stated in your handbook. If your car is unmodified and used on the road, that is what you need. If it is modified or used on track then use something better....simple!

Thanks oilman, There isn`t a mention of "pd" on these oils like on "supersyn plus" which goes on about specially formulated for vag pd tdi engines. Is the 170dpf not a pd then? Or is the "titan gti" back compatable?
Is there any major difference in these oils IF sticking to fixed service maintenance as it mentions "longlife" services:shrug: (I have a few cans of this supersyn plus for my ibiza 130 so wondered if I could use it or not in the new leon)

PD170 (2.0ltr) requires only VW 507.00 oil - 5w 30 weight. If it's not got that on the bottle, then it's not the correct oil.

As far as oil manufacturers stating things like "for use in VAG pd engines" etc. then that's just the marketing blurb. The VW spec is what you need to look for, and the correct weight.

If any of you guys/gals want your used engine oil analised I will see what I can do for you.

I can do various tests, see what kind of condition your oil is in. See if there is any fuel/water/coolant contamination.

Wear metal tests, see if any metals are wearing before any critical damage occurs.

See how much Calcium/Zinc is in there to give you an idea of how long your drain intervals should be.

PM me for any details. Offer is there for anyone who wants it. :funk:

 Don't use Mobil 1 in a PD TDI, it does not meet the spec.

See here:
http://www.mobil.com/UK-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil_1_0W-40.asp#SpecsApprovalsTitle
...it does not meet 505.01, 506.01 or 507.00.
It might be good for some petrol engines but definitely not PD TDIs.

The only Mobil oil that meets the 505.01 spec (for PD 130s etc) is this one "Mobil Synt S Special V 5W-40":
http://www.mobil.com/UK-English/Lub...ynt_S_Special_V_5W-40.asp#SpecsApprovalsTitle

Using Mobil 1 (or any other oil not meeting the VW specs) will lead to premature wear of the cam lobes driving the injector pumps and a big bill...
I do hope you're not using it in your TDI....

Love it when people say this is the best money can buy.....

Cos Mobil have found a different planet to suck its oil out of? There are TWO criteria for making good/bad oils.

1) Base Oils
2) Additives

Now, Mobil use a base stock called Exxon (Esso) for semi-synthetic oils.....this is a group 1 base oil, you can also get 'cheaper' hydraulic grade group 1 base oils.

Fully synthetic oils come from PAO's

There are two main players in the additive industry and about 3-5 less 'good' additivie manufacturers.

The reason Mobil can afford to have TV commercials and high profile advertising/sponsoring is because people pay top whack for it. End of the day they are ripping you off BIG TIME!

The oil mentioned by baz192 / esp 5w30 does say that it is vw507 approved and suitable for diesel particulate filters, or "dpf" as is the leon fr tdi.. It should be backwards compatable in theory and therefore suitable for all pd:shrug: Being the highest spec oil for a vwpd tdi
