I was out in my leon last year in the one or so days of snow we had in london, and it was pretty hairy! lots of strange noises from the crushing snow!

I went out last night in the snow but I have to say i was pleased with how the FR handled it.My previous two leons(MK1s) have been a nightmare in the snow but the FR just took it all in its stride. I think as soon as your new tires are on you will be back smiling again even in snow.

:D - thats good to know..

400 Mile drive tomorrow - see how well i can wear them out ;)

There was heavy snow falling in Buxton, UK last night.

Last year I had about 3" of snow and I went out in a 3 cylinder Corsa with skinny tyres and it's the best car I've used in the snow. I overtook a few people going up hills. Amazing car!

My 1.7 DTi Astravan was the best thing in the snow ever! Skinny tyres and just letting engine tickover get me up hills, I was going through deep snow across the grass when we had various junctions blocked by whell spinning artics in my town a few years ago.

My Octavia was really bad in the snow, not really looking forward to driving my FR once the white stuff hits!

so ideally get 4 space savers?

Aside from the speed issue ..... in theory yes. If you look at motorsports 'snow' tyres you'll see the different width and profile of tyre

Tam you are bang on there, i was out last night and imho the fr tdi is the by far the worst car i have ever driven in the snow, the only way i could make any progress was to turn off the traction control and the abs was on all the time the only way i could stop was to keep pumpin the pedal myself and my tires have approx 6/7mm tread on them. So please be careful first time out in the snow.

I thought with the title of that thread you were going to say you crashed it! Phew and congratulations :p

Looking forward to seeing how the Fr handles in the snow, though my daily trip to work is 35miles each way lol.. Tyres are down to their legal limit, and im getting some new ones this week.

Not to hijack your thread, but any reccomendations for the best?

I was offered Bridgestones 18" 40 Profile, and rim protectors for atound £70 each the other day. Not too bad. However im prepared to spend more, to get somerthing really good.

Cant remember what else was on offer. Michelins, P-Zeros again (no no), Toyos, and Dunlops..

Whats the advantage of this design over the one below?

Again, sorry for hijacking your thread, but since its on tyres, and im replacing mine asap too.. :p

No worries, I'll soon require tyres too, and the only ones i'm aiming for are the new Goodyear F1 asymetrical, which were the recent winners in the Evo Magazine tyre test, and is the sucessor to the highly popular Goodyear F1 GSD3's

Not the cheapest tyres about, but...... got to be a good tyre :D

Hopefully they wont be anything like the F1 GSD3's, which while are a great tyre in the wet/dry - are absolutely horrendous in snow!! Think thats mainly due to the V pattern though, so those might not be so bad..

I think the line about a particular car being bad to drive in snow is cobblers! If a rally driver can drive his xxx horsepower turbo charged car at 70 round a bend in the snow - it proves that it is down to the tyres on the car, skill and common sense.

If the British public can get into their heads that winter tyres are for the season and not just for when there is snow on the ground, there would be less accidents I think.

Best comment of the week, seriously. I think it's pure stupidity to drive with summer tyres on snow/ice.

Yes that's true but when you might get 3 days of actual snow and infrequent ice - it doesn't make financial sense to keep a set of tyres just for that purpose. You just have to learn to drive carefully.

That's a typical snowy winters day over here - hardly a reason to break out the snow chains, especially not compared ti what you get in Finland :)

You have more snow there than we have here ;) Here in southern Finland we mainly have snow on road from January-February if even then. They pour tons of salt on the roads to keep them dry. Mainly our main roads here are completely dry, wet or slightly icy. But even if it's only those few days you need the winter tyres, it's worth the money.

Well i'll tempt fate - i've not stuck a car through a hedge yet although i've seen plenty others do it. Thankfully i drive to work early and finish early so i can get off the road before the other nutters come out to play. If it's 'that' bad i stay at home and work from here :)

It's been -4 degrees and colder the last few mornings and whilst it's fair to say the falkens aren't winter tread - i've not noticed them becoming dangerous yet. Progressive gentle braking, entering corners at the right speed and smooth acceleration are all I think it needs. Most people don't drive with any consideration for road conditions because they're not used to having to think about it.

Not had to much trouble with the FR, agreed it's a little hairy at time in the snow but that's down to how you drive. Gave it a little respect and it wasn't to bad considering all that torque. I'd have to agree with you Fester I can't warrant spending the money for winter tyres would love too but I'll just drive slower ;)
Did the Mira track day today and I will be leaving the ESP on when it's wet and snowy from now on. The skid pan simulated black ice and trust me anyone who's not tried it that ESP is amazing and there for a reason, were not perfect and without it far to easy to spin out.
