Car gone pop - but now fixed

I'm currently (not) driving an 04 FR TDi with 40k on the clocks and a rather "tame" remap - to give my clutch a nice easy time.

Was driving out tonight on a nice quiet windy road, not being stupid but giving it a little bit of stick, slowed down as the road came to a town and the 60 turned to a 30. Turned into the last corner of the 60 zone doing about 35-40mph, then the car lurched forward, massive pop and i came straight off the gas and pulled over.

Quick check under the car to see if i'd hit anything, nothing - tyres all ok, but when i restarted the car, it was blowing like crazy, and on the drive home wouldn't go aboove 2.5k revs. Really struggled over a flyover to get back home.

Car is also smoking like crazy, thick black smog (more than usual).

My Guess is that i've blown a hole in the exhaust somewhere, and the car has initiated some sort of limp mode?

I'll be taking it to the local motosave tomorrow (only place that is open) to let them get it on the ramps.

Any ideas what to expect, could the remap cause this?

Sorry for the vague description, just after any stories of similar occurances, to maybe put my mind at rest.

Cheers

My Search Syntax Skills suck. Any info that I could take with me with a torch and go look at now?

Yup, sounds about right what happened.

Thing that made me thing exhaust was the blowing sound, but could a blown cooler pipe have the same effect?

when my dads went on his bora it was just under the front of the car mate, you should see a pipe stiking out of the bottom somewhere

There is a fairly wide pipe actually rubbing against the spinny wheel thing that has a belt on it, i think from the alternator.

The pipe is getting worn down, tried to see what it's attatched to - but its not! just loose somewhere under the driver side headlight!

Will have to take the engine over off and have a proper look in the morning

The exact same thing happened on my PD130, the alternator pulley wore through all the plastic on the piping so the c clip popped off and ripped it out from the intercooler. I bought new piping and clips from the dealers, took the bumper off and got to work.

Mine did this recently got it sorted by a local Seat specialist in 30mins.

The right angle pipe that plugs onto the intercooler and mates with the solid pipe that runs past the alternator was about £20 part no 6Q0145834D I think. Looked like they had to take that back housing of the light off to get to it.

Luckily I didnt have to get the solid pipe replaced.

Hope thats of help

Excellent cheers, I'll see if I can get the back of the light off and have a look at where it plugs in.

I think the pipe will need replacing, it looks ****ed in the light.

Only problem is, nearest seat/skoda or audi dealer is 35miles away - and i don't fancy limping all that way!

The right angled pipe had popped out at the bottom end (where it goes into the intercooler?)

The little lugs that the clip is supposed to keep in place have been worn off, so the pipe just slides in and out freely, despite the clip being on or not.

I tried cable tying the pipe in place as solidly as possible, but nothing will hold it in place when I turn the engine on and give it a few revs.

To get this sorted, I'm going to need a new right angled section of the pipe, and I'm going to have to take the drivers headlight completely out - so I have room to get the clip off, then back on again.

Any ideas how the headlight comes out? I undid the two allan key bolts on the top, but it still won't budge.

I'll phone seat tomorrow with that part number, cheers for that - but driving the car to a dealership is out of the question, as it appears a bit of oil has sprayed out all over the engine bay when the pipe popped off - and I don't fancy driving it 35miles in this condition.

lol this was happening to my car twice a week untill i got my sfs pipework, nothing to worry about most the sections are between 20 and 30 quid each and take about 5 mins to fit but none of mine went for abour 5 weeks after the big turbo then when 1 went they all started to go all of the time lol my advice is get some de-greaser spray and clean all the connections very well, any oil will help it slip and will pretty soon break again!!

good luck

to take the headlight off you need to take the bumper off just follow round the edges of the bumper there is loads of torxe screws to undo then after you have done all them( in the arch, under the bumper and on top of the bumper) there is 2 inside the mesh, if you just look into the mesh you should be able to see them. then just go to one side and pull the corner of the bumper away from the car it just snap off then get someone else to do the otherside then it sould slide forward.

then there is just a few other screws you need to do to undo the headlight then it comes straight out!!

Most likely its popped off at the bottom where it goes into the intercooler, thats what happened to mine and as it had popped out the whole pipe had moved towards the pulley.

Mine was still under warrenty so i just took it to the stealer and let them sort it out. They actually replaced 2 of the pipes on mine.

I got a lift to the dealership last night, no pipe in stock - but ordered one, and should be here on wednesday.

Also picked up some engine oil to top up with, although I'm sure what he gave me isn't right - I remember needing specific PD oil when I last serviced, something like 505.50, but this is just 505.00
