Diesel sump

Just to round off a crappy day, I put a bleeding great hole in the sump of my 2001 TDi110. Not sure if I've buggered the engine, had to limp around a roundabout after the oil light came on and it conked out :(

GSF are showing a sump for a Golf mk3 diesel for £22 ex vat, is this the same part as my Leon?

Similar happened to me a year ago.

Put a hole in the sump in a car park (don't ask...), engine cut out straight away and within 1 minute all of the oil had drained onto the floor.:(

Called SEAT Assist who gave me a courtesy car while mine was taken to the dealership.

2 days and £250 later (new sump/oil) all ok again.

On another note, just found out my car has 5 years SEAT Assist cover, not the 3 that the dealership told me:D

But do you know how you did this????!!

i would guess its hard thing to do. I live opn a road with 10 speed bumps the in the middle of the road kind and I go over them with the wheels on the top was it one of them?

mk3 golf is not the same you need the mk4 golf or a3 m8
Yep, called GSF who have a spare on the shelf for £72, as long as I've got an Oil Level Sensor which they think I ought to have. I got a flashing red light on the dash, and according to the handbook I should have got a flashing amber for low oil level. Without going under the car I'm not sure.

2 days and £250 later (new sump/oil) all ok again.
I live in hope I can get away with this cheap! Reading some of the stories from the US TDi forums, seems like the engine survives and the turbo goes.

Managed to clip a kerbstone when turning around in a place I've turned around a thousand times before. Must've caught things just right to crack the sump on the kerb.

Well, for the benefit of anyone in the same situation doing a search - the next phase of the job.

Sump sourced from GSF for £70-ish, who don't sell the sealant goo so a tube of insta-gasket stuff (smelt exactly like the silicon I used to seal around my bath) from my local auto parts store did the job.

First sump leaked a little around the plug and had a hairline crack around the inset where the level gauge goes, a manufacturing defect judging by the rough alloy on the other side of the crack.
Swapped it for another at GSF with no trouble, found this one also leaks a bit around the sump plug, but more crucially the holes tapped into the sump for the level gauge were about 1/4" shorter than those on the original sump, meaning the level gauge couldnt be bolted in tight. I used a flat and a spring washer on the bolt to make it fit right.
(NB - I'd avoid GSF pattern parts in future. My Citroen owning brethren aren't overly impressed with their generic no-brand kit either. Seat main dealer wanted about £90 for a sump which was presumably the genuine VAG item)

Fresh oil, fresh filter and start it up.
The engine itself sounded fine, and for ten, no fifteen wonderful minutes as I drove home I thought I'd dodged an expensive bullet.

Then the turbo started making a hell of a racket, boost vanished, and the car started making enough smoke to be worthy of a James Bond movie.

Arse.
But at least the rest of the engine appears to have survived.

sounds like one of the boost pipes have been dislodged Rich.
I wish I had your optimism! :)

Apart from being jacked up a couple of times, nothing has been done to the car other than change the sump and drive it down the road. I'm not sure how anything could have gotten moved or fallen off.
Hopefully I can take the turbo out over the weekend and confirm.

Well, didn't get the turbo fully removed, but managed to get the intake pipes off so I could feel the turbine - I have about a 10mm play vertical/horizontal play in the spindle - methinks its knackered!

New turbo is about £600. Recon/repair is about £450. Breakers yard is £150.
As the breakers I phoned offers a 3 month warranty, I think they're first port of call!

As long as it works, I'm not too bothered.

This car has given me as much greif as my last 3 BX 16valver's combined, if my finances play out right I think she's up for trade-in.
