air vent rattle??

hi , i've read several rattle posts in the forum but i couldnt find a similar one with mine...

my leon's only rattle is coming from the center air vents...it's like something in it rattles..a cable , a plastic or etc..
on a nice road or corners there is no sound..but in the road bumps or holes , it starts to rattle...sounds like 2 plastics are hitting each other...

today i'm planning to remove my head unit and take a look at the part upper through the air vent..is that part reachable from head unit's place?? if it's not there is no need to remove the head unit...
if air vents are reachable from the head unit's area , i'll tape every cable.

search for the ANNOYING rattle thread, ive put pics in on how i fixed that rattle, it drove me nutts and stealer didnt want to know.

and your absolutly right, it is 2 plastic parts nudging each other, the bottom of the actual vent hole and the piece underneath that. i just used some plastic strips above the vent holes, you will see a little piece of fabric stuck in the position already, obvoiusly to stop that part rattling, i just wedged plastic strips in to force the whole aircon vent down slightly, pushing it down onto the lower piece, stopping the rattle

airvents seems to break easily. they are constantly on back order at the garage. also it could be the usuall culprit at the back of the dash that need a clip.

send it back to the dealer and let them sort it under warranty

the pictures are great..i think it will solve my rattle...but the problems is i dont have the nuts to remove the head unit and clima facia... if i have the nuts , i dont trust the plastic strips on removing the head unit , cause they are broken IN my head unit... today i got 4 metal pieces from my friends sony cd player...but i think metal may damage may head units plastic =( ....scary job to do..but if i complete the job , my car will be the most quiet car i've ever had...

the plastic packaging strips is the daddy, i found that dvd cases were to thick and brittle, but the strips will not break, they may fold and ive found you only get 2/3 decent extractions out of them before you have to snip the end off and have a clean cut edge again.

i made x4 12" long strips to fit into the slots, then the spair plastic i had i used to fit behind the stereo, in from the sides, this gives a great handle to pull the unit out with,

the air con is a couple of bolts and it comes out easy, the hard bit on that is uncliping the 3 sets of wiring clamps, bit fiddly they were but patients is the key.

once the cables are unclipped from the head your done, ready to stop this darn rattle.

im thinking of revisiting the area with a tube of silicone and putting some into the area that actually causes the squeaking/rattle rather than pushing the unit down from above the airvents.

Need to get more silicone to do that first tho!!

i printed your pictures on your rattle post...
i'll go to the service and tell them to do it =)) i think that costs a little thing...

I hope your dealer is more successful than mine, after 4 trips to the dealer to 'fix' the rattle I eventually had a go myself and was able to sort it easily with the help of the pictures for the site.

It looks more worse than it is if you take you time you will find it easy enough

I also had a vibration coming from a sort of round unit which would be in behind where the stereo sits, I had to wedge some plastic in there too as well as at the vents at the top.

wolk: when you say you havent got the nuts, are you refering to the hex bolts that release the aircon panel? as no nuts are required to actually remove the stereo, only a couple of hex nuts on the upper panel??

conzy: glad ive helped, can you see this "round unit" in any of my pics? can you point circle it on a pic?

no no , i have 4 METAL strips to remove the head unit...but they are not fitting easily to the spaces between aircon and head unit..i should push them softly..but in this case i dont have the nuts =) because when i pust those metals they can harm my head unit's and also the aircon's plastic parts.... and that would be my nightmare =(

I think you would be better with plastic strips, either a cut up credit card or I used a plastic spine you would use to hold paper together cut into thin strips. There is more chance of marking the dash with metal

It is the unit behind the plastic cage/housing the radio sits in. I just wedged some foam wrapped in insulated tape between the unit and the back of the radio cage in there
