I was out in the beeza last nite and i noticed that the heat wasnt coming out of the heater when set to like 25'c so i put it to 28 and it was still coming out cold i know that it deffo comes out warmer than that on 25'c, so i looked at my external temp sensor and it was reading like 24'c which was deffo way out, was fecking freezing last nite, so im putting it down to a shagged external temp sensor, just wondering how easy are they to change? lol:whistle:

Hiya. I just changed my outside temp on my Mk3 last week. I opened up the bottom of the passenger side mirror housing with an allen key and I see that the previous owner had just hacked the wires and joined the cables to the temp sender and done them up with insulation tape - a right ol' bodge up but an easier way than taking off all the door mirror and passenger side door trim.

I got the temp sensor off ebay for 12 quid (it weren't second hand someone just bought it and never ended up fitting it) and I decided to fit it properly so i did take the route of removing the mirror and the door trim an then plugged it into a connector near the lower large speaker in the passenger door. A longer job but a much neater job and worth it I would say.

Andy.

Or solder + electrical tape it! LOL

I changed mine, but to be fair, even @ 28 degrees the air isnt particularly hot, its only super-hot when you set it to 'HI'.

why not just solder and heat shrink it?

Yes, would be better to solder and heat shrink it rather than just wrap the wires around each other and use insulating tape like the previous owner done with mine, over an amount of time moisture and water seeped into the connection and the insulation tape came off and the wires corroded.

Its that kind of adage, do you stick two wires into your electrical socket or do you go the proper way and wire a plug properly on to it and then plug it in - both ways will work but the latter will be done properly and be safer :)

my temp sensor has never worked ever since i got my car. decided to do something about it today so went down to the seat dealership and bought a new one. opened up the mirror case and found it had already been replaced once before. it WAS soldered but a bit of a cowboy effort at covering it with a minimal amount of leccy tape, so the joints had corroded nicely

so i cut the old one off and soldered my new one on and then put sleeving over the joins and then heatshrink. should be nicely protected.

all working fine now and only took 15 mins to do :)

its now 17 degrees outside and not 58!!

sorry to bring this old thread up again... Done a search but couldnt find what I was looking for

Had a quick bash last night, but didnt have a clue how to get the mirror off or the plastic housing on the underside of the mirror! Removed the little torx screw but the plastic wouldnt budge!

My mirror is also really floppy at the attachment to the base so need to have a look at that, hoping its just something that needs tightening up or something!?

What is the procedure for removing the mirror from the base, and also how does the plastic trim come off from underneath the mirror?!

Thanks

Its a complete arse.

The out casing actually pulls of but it doesnt feel like it, if you grab the part by the glass or nearest the window you'll feel it a little lose. Just a case of pulling hard and worry you dont crack it i'm afraid.

My temp sender was reading all over the place and then just read '--' so I took the mirror apart to find the original sensor disintergrated. I cut the wires and put in a new one. Although this gave some funny readings for a few minutes before going back to reading '--' again lol. £25 wasted and I don't know why it's never worked. Conneted double checked and all is fine. Original connection in door checked and fine. It was suggested to me that the radio unit could be at fault. Vag-com just says there's a sensor fault. A fair bit of money to have another go though and my AC and heaters all work fine.

Mine also reads '--' at the moment :-(

Is it worth me replacing the sensor or could this be another problem, its been on vagcom for a check twice this year once at midland vw for its service then at ptorque for the remap and they said there were no fault codes present.

I dont want to replace the sensor if its not just that at fault, any ideas or shall i just go for it and change the bugger, because i have no aircon at all, i sweat like a pig in the heat!

Mine's on "--.-" as well, apart from occasionally flicking back to life to tell me it's -40.0c outside.

How much is a new one from the stealers?
