Some good detailed photos there Matt, keep 'em coming

I take it you must be doing the work on your employers premises? Can only imagine it makes it easier and more rewarding doing it yourself.

Never seen an engine quite in so many bits.

The ATP mani is a total **** to fit. I made the mistake of bolting it on which took ages then realising i hadn't put the back turbo bolt in, took it off again which was a struggle and sorted it, to find a month later it started blowing.

Tried to get it back off but the nuts would not come, ended up removing the cylinder head and grinding the sods off. It was a nightmare.

Been there ( forgetting to put the 'front' bolt in.) I'm wondering whether I sould look at changing the mani>turbo gasket every 1500-2000 miles.

Have you had a look at your manifold this time, Matt? Mine was cracked right up by the 'front' bolt.

Of course they are.....

OK, mine's cracked.... I'll take it off and wait eight weeks while they swap it. (not that they would now that I've ground the corner off it.)

I'll go for a better one next time. My only concern is that I don't want my bolts snapping off in the turbo again like last time :scary:

Excellent work there cupra matt.
I'm glued to this thread. Can't wait to see the pics for the clutch and diff install.
I've always had the idea that removing the head would be a much bigger problem, but you made it look easy. When you replace the head how do you ensure that the timing of the valves in relation to the pistons is spot on, is there a mark on the timing belt.
This has the makings of the most complete and detailed big turbo install to date. Keep up the good work. :)

there are marks on the cam pully which you line up with the cam cover, a mark on the crank pully whick you line up with the pully cover and a mark on the flywheel which you line up with the gearbox housing

i dont run any gaskets on my gt28rs....as alex said...a waste of time!
if you aint got a gasket you cant blow a gasket ;)

and if you dont run a gasket relying on flat surfaces, then you need to hope these flat surfaces stay flat when heat cycled.

I had more reliable fitment when gasket-less when IHI'd on JS mani, but when things warp, they will blow.

Well today's progress involved stripping the cylinder head.

I have removed the cams, and all the valves ( fiddly) and cleaned the head.

I have also put the new cambelt on.

And refitted the sump.

Pics to follow later on as iam going up to my dads house to make a start putting the suprtech valves in. ( not lucking forward to this part ).

Yep. We run all our GT28rs kits without a manifold to turbo gasket. They blow very quickly otherwise!

I wonder how many people have had rapid failure??!!

Matt, will JBS map a big turbo kit thats not been fitted or bought through them??

Not sure if they will map it really, but it wont be them doing it anyway, i will take it to another custom code dealer nearer to me.

Thanks for that info Bill. Bill do you run uprated valve springs?
