TDI FR problems with starting

Hi,

I bought my 05 reg Ibiza TDI FR a few days ago and am extreemly pleased with it!!

But on the odd occasion i do seem to have problems starting it, when i first turn the key it doesnt always start and just turns over, but after another attempt it starts!!

just wondered whether anyone else has/ or is having a similar problem?
what the potential solutions to this are? is the car prone to any problems?? or simply whether its just me not giving the engine enough time once i have turned the key and the lights are on!!

i had a diesel astra before my ibiza and i never had to allow any time before starting, and just wondered whether anone has any advice for me?

thanks for reading my post and i am extreemly greatful to any suggestions/ advice that you may have!!

Cheers mj88fr!

my 1st question was going to be have you had a diesel before, but you have answered that one. all diesels ive had in the past have needed the time for the glow plug light to go out, i dont have a newer diesel engine yet! good luck with it.

Hi im totally new to this site but im a Honda technician. If I were you leave the igintion on a few seconds prior to starting just to let the glow plugs (pre heat plugs) do there job. Diesels ignite the fuel using compression rather than spark so that compression (heat) isnt there until the engine is fired up.
Glow plugs heat the cumbustion chamber to give the fuel something to ignite with.

Hope this helps.

Other than that could be a faulty fuel temp sensor but doubt it. Or if its poor start when hot could be fuel starvation due to evaporation of fuel. Only happens on turbo diesels as theres excessive heat.

Vauxhall diesels do heat the plugs a damn sight faster than most. Are you waiting for the glowplug lamp to go out before attempting to start? Could be the immobiliser I guess, mines stopped me from start the engine a few times. Does it happen when the car's been stood for a long time or doesn't it matter?

hi.... ive had the exact same problem with mine but ive got a 2.0 sport ibiza 53reg. Ive taken mine to dealers and they can't find whats up with it, had that many tests on it.... but showing up no faults. The last thing they did to it was clean the throttle body and change the idle-ing speed (whatever that is)

Still happens now.... [:@]

thanks guys im greatful for your suggestions, it has been puzzling me a bit!!

it does seem to do it more when its been stood but went to morrissons earlier and left it stood for 10mins in the carpark and when i came back it wouldnt start 1st time of asking!!

im going to book it in at my local seat dealer in the morning tho, afterall its still under warrenty!!

didnt expect to have problems with the car tho as its only done 8000 miles!!

aside from this minor issue ive only driven the car for 4/5 days and i am quickly falling in love with it!!! the power is better than i had anticiapted and the overall driving experience is excellent!!!

are all you guys happy with your seat's?
what have you got and how do you rate them?

thanks again,
matt

Mine did this yesterday for the first time in 18 months. It always starts instantly even if i dont allow the glow plugs to warm up (sometimes i forget). It was turning over for a 5 seconds and didnt start, but on the second attempt it started normally. Hope it was a freak event and doesn't happen again! Mines an 03 tdi130

well unfortunatley the faults developed one step further over the past 24 hours!!!! it now won't start at all!! so its been towed to the seat garage!

i have to say i am disappointed that this has happened on an 05 plate car with under 8000 miles on the clock, but i guess these things do happen!!

im hoping that it is a silly fault like an imobliser problem that can be easily rectified!!

one of the reasons i went for an ibiza tdi was volkswagen engines decent record for reliability, hope im not proved wrong!

i was told that before you turn the car over you should wait for the liughts to go out on the dash but sounds like yours has gone a step further than that maybe the glow plugs are buggered? good luck mate my engine hasn't had many probs so far its just the rest of the car lol

9 times out of ten it starts ok and only does it when it's warm so should'nt need glow plugs i changed the coolant temp sensor today but still no good but when i swtched the engine off on the way back from work to move a fallen tree out of my way!!! the engine did'nt even turn over the first few times ah what a wonderful day!!!

I tend to get in, put the key in, turn it round so the glow plugs show and then put on my seat belt as by the time i've put it on the glow plug light is out and the car will start no prob.

i think it might be the starter motor took it to a guy who specializes in refurbing starters and it never did it once typical ! think i'll change my fuel fiter as well just in case theres some water or crap floating around causing it .i have also been told it could be the immobiliser chip in the key so i'll use my spare for a couple of days

hi redders, iv finally got the problem sorted (fingers crossed) after 4 more visits to the dealership and countless breakdowns!my problem ended up developing to the stage where it would just cut out at say 50mph! ended up being a crushed earth wire after all, and that as you can imagine is a hard fault to spot. hope this helps, mine seems better now!

cheers i think i've sussed it ! i got a salvage starter from a 04 reg an just when i was undoing the multi plug on the celunoid the wire came off in my hand so after loads of soldering an swearin so far so good have to see after the weekend now i've got to go and beg for the money for my stater motor back the vibration from the engine idling must have gradually almost severed the wire over time as it's pretty tight on the loom
