put a 5 litre can of diesel in the boot.

my beep came on at about 370 miles, at 410 the display was reading '0'.

trawled up and down the M3 for a while, until i started loosing power - at 465 miles!

so I'm more pleased with that. except instead of £40 for a fill up, it cost £45

wonder what the chance of the display actually getting it accurate in future?

Interesting result - but I'm not sure risking running out of fuel on the motorway is the best idea...

motorway seemed ideal in the slow lane - hard shoulder always available :)

didnt wanna run out in the middle of a traffic jam coming up to a roundabout in rush hour

Top gear did this in an Audi A8 with a V8 tdi lump!!!!!
It got to scotland and back on one tank of fuel around 800 miles I think,
the tip is to roll to any stop from as far away as possible, i.e not using your brakes
as the fuel system shut's down to tick over mode, basically it uses no fuel!!!

I remember that episode. Anyone know how much Jezza put in the tank at the start though?? Sure an A8 can hold a fair bit of juice!

Am i not correct in saying that happens when you drop down the gears approaching a roundabout as the car does not use any fuel when in gear if the accelarator os not being pressed but it uses a tiny amount of fuel whilst in neutral (or with the clutch in) to prevent the car from stalling.

Maybe im completely off the mark here but that is what i thought big jeremy said.

I think it was around £80 worth of fuel, so round about an 80 litre tank? It was a 4.0/2 TDi quattro i think

If you're coasting along and coming to a stop, in gear, and the engine is being turned over by the wheels turning through the gearbox then you're not using any fuel at all. If you put the clutch in and freewheel the ecu runs the engine at tickover, therefore uses fuel.

The vid of Jeremy in the Audi has been removed from Google videos and I can't find it on You tube.

Not sure carrying a bit of diesel on the boot would help you if you ran out of diesel anyway...

You'd have to reprime the fuel pipes

actually i ran out of fuel just as i hit the off ramp between junc 7 & 8

dead lucky.

so just coasted straight into the petrol station next to a pump:happy:

filled completely up, after about 5 ignitions (where it died each time), it was resting at idle stabley.

PD's have a lift pump in the tank, so cycling the ignition key a few times will prime the system up to the tandem pump, then a couple of cranks and it should be away.

my next question... everytime i turn the key to '3' position, i hear a squirt, presume of fuel.

is this one of those pumps?

you mentioned 2 levels of pump there (lift pump & tandem pump) is there a diagram to show the sequence of pumps?
