Ok little update sat morning i put £20 in to fill it up from where it was between 1/4 n 1/2 tank, computer still said id do 315 miles to the tank, however i drove from cambridge to milton keynes and back then from camb to braintree and back, ive done 215 miles and im just gettin onto half a tank left which suggests ill get around 400ish to the tank, but yet on those journeys which were dual carriageway/motorway all the way i only managed 44mpg???

mate make sure your a/c is not on! it makes a BIG diff!

What is your driving style like? If you've got a lead foot then you will be using more fuel.
My Ibiza FR TDI always reflects the way I have been driving previously when I fill it up! E.G. I'll get in it and check how many miles it says e.g. 315 and then when I drive for about 10 mins just taking my time it go's up to, say, e.g. 450!

Also are your tyres nice and hard?

I make sure my tyres are nice and inflated and I travel from Colchester to Sunderland (280 miles) every weekend and use less than half a tank and the miles the computer says I have left is normally about 270 after the journey!

Just filled up my car, done 460miles and the light had only just come on. Worked out at 50mpg over the course of the tank. Should have seen the black smoke when I cleared the turbo out though......... think I enjoy my normail style of driving better even if I do only average 40mpg.

Nah no lead foot at all, if anything i dont use anywhere near its potential and as for the tyres i make sure they are always spot on. i reset my figures and still only says 315 when fill up and still max mpg ive experienced is 44

Try venting as much as you can mate. My tank said I had 680 miles worth (due to the way I had been driving).

are there any useful tips to keep the turbo sweet - eg revving it like f*** everyonce in a while or something?

what does 'clearing the turbo' out involve - or did you literally scrub it?

Gooner, I would clean the injectors me, because it effects the mpg if they are clogged up! Get some redex diesel injector cleaner and see what that does!
It worked for me on my gfs Polo! Worth a try I suppose! :)

I only seem to be getting 380 miles to my Ibiza FR which seems very small considering I dont hammer it. Plus the mpg guage is telling me I am averaging 52mpg over a tank, yet when I work it out it's abround the 42mpg mark...Any ideas how I can get some more miles out of it.
Also what you guys inflating your tyres to, i am on 35psi at the front and 33psi at the back on the standard 205/40 R17...

Just got 520 miles out of my last tank (worked out around 43mpg). First time I've got over 500miles though. Wasn't exactly driving slowly either :)

370 on the beep 410 on '0', 460 in reality, 43 ave mpg display, 215/40's, 32psi.

and breathe.

off/on'ing the MAF sensor with some vaseline seems to have put me up by 1, from 42 ave.

I was driving trying to have the turbo work as little as poss to return the best mpg so naturally it will clog up so every so often give it a little blast through the gears to clear the soot out. If you use very little turbo for a while you'll see a massive plume of smoke when you give it the boot..............quite a sight really :D

It's extremely difficult to take it easy long enough to see how far a tank will get you. Motorway slip roads are my vice, it all goes well til I reach one, then all hell breaks loose :clap:

Just watched Mythbusters (Series 5 Episode 11 for those interested), they tested the myth that tailgating a HGV reduces drag and in turn reduces fuel consumption.

Results were fascinating, they used a standard US 'semi' and something that looked liked a Dodge Magnum estate. When tested with a laptop plugged into the ECU over a measured 1/2 mile and with no truck in front it did 32mpg at 55mph.

The speed remained at 55mph and the car drove behind at various distances, the results are below.

As you can see the results are pretty good but of course it is also potentially quite dangerous.

100ft 35.5 mpg 11% increase
50ft 38.5mpg 20% increase
20ft 40.5mpg 27% increase
10ft 44.5mpg 39% increase

At 2ft mpg drops back to 40mpg because the driver has to really concentrate and constantly feather the throttle.

Personally I think 100ft is more than reasonable when following at a matched speed and a 10% increase in economy is quite acceptable.

If you want the episode I can point you in the right direction.
