I have been told that you can get a good noise out of the traditional airfilter by drilling the Airbox with holes. Has anyone done this and what doese it sound like? any pictures and coments would be good. and if you have a sound clip of what it sounds like.

Cheers!

Do it ;)

Did it on my 2.0 8v and my 16v.

Also, remove all the extra plastic piping around the front of the airbox, which is very restrictive.......

Remove the plastic 'surround' that encases the drivers side headlamp to.....

Open up the airbox, and remove the 2 'trumpets', in on the inlet and 1 on the outlet....

drill the bottom half of the airbox, on the side that faces the drivers side wing..... I did mine with a 10mm flat bladed drill bit, and did about 30-40 holes even spaced ;)

works a treat, and gives far better airflow and induction noise :D

the drilled airbox is an ok mod. i did my 8v, it got a good induction sound and made it a lot louder. i binned the standard filter and fitted a green one. I havent noticed much of a difference in performance. it just sounds louder. saying that though, i need to replace my air mass flow sensor anyways, so that might have an affect.

dead easy to do though!

Has anyone drilled a the airbox of a 1.4? Will they sound louder and meaner too or will it not make that much difference?

I was going to ask that! Dont think it would be too much more difficult, dont know where you would drill the holes though as the airbox is smaller and a completely different shape.

just to update, the cold air feed i had was a bit pis* and wasnt in the right place, i got a k&n smaller pipe which feeds perfectly down the side of the box to the front spoiler, sits in nicely. what a difference! it noticeably picks up better under accelearation. much nicer than before, goes to show it makes a difference where the pipe sits. well chuffed!

There's no F in Quality..

Just drill holes around the outside of the round box that sits on top of the engine...

To be honest, it's not really worth it on a 1.4 due to the location of the air box, as all it will be doing is sucking in hot air from the engine...

You're better off relocating the airbox with either a Gti one (and then drilling it as above) or fitting an induction kit, which relocates the air filter to the drivers side wing..... away from the hot engine.

Have a search on here for the patented 'SPT'..... (sh1t pipe technology ;) )

Isn't that the SPT that andyj is on about? I had a Green air filter on my old 1.4 sounded nice and seemed to make the car a bit smoother.
