Hi all recently my 02 leon cupra has not liked starting up to well. When first turning the engine on the revs sit at about 1500 and then drop down to about 800 after a couple of minutes just wondering if this is normal? and if the car is not left running for a couple of minutes its jerks and splutters when pulling away in first any ideas what could be wrong? help needed:confused:

Sounds like a coil pack problem. Does the car feel odd when driving too? A coil pack failing can cause these problems and when it dies, will also cause the car to misfire and jump around like a SOAB!

the high revs at start up are ok... auto matic choke... although mine hits 1200 i think. the coughing/sputering could be many things. if you can get acess to vagcom do so and see if any faults show. if coil packs are dodgy i would have thought vagcom will show it

Same old Story!!

This is a very common event I'm afraid.

I have an 01 Cupra, that's just clocked 155,000 mls, and it has a history of this rough idle and poor running. The car has a Full Service History, so it's been looked after.
When the car was still under warranty, I started to get this problem of erratic idling from cold start-up and then jerky acceleration when attempting to drive off. Sometimes wouldn't even move unless you either gave it a boot full while slipping the clutch (not a good idea!)or wait a couple of minutes for it to settle down, before driving off. The Engine management light would also stay lit.

The car went in and out of the dealers every time this happened, and pretty much every time, they said they couldn't find any faults on diagnostics, or that they couldn't get the symptoms to happen when they used it.

Eventually, they replaced the Maf unit (Which didn't seem to help) and finally the coil packs. This did the job for a fair while, but just this week the same thing is happening all over again, but worse!, with the Diagnostic light on permanently. And weirdly the Traction warning light is also affected when this happens. It randomly comes on and stays on, until you switch the engine off.
This also happened with the original problems.
I couldn't get pass 100mph very easily either! (on a track of course)

So now I have booked it in to an independent tuning specialist, who hopefully will shed some new light on to this.

I'll let you know the outcome if you're interested.
