i do normally go with the 'if it isn't broke dont fix it' saying, but... i do agree with some of the other posts in this thread, your insurance company wont like it (or they will because they wont have to pay out) if you, as standard are meant have to XL tyres on.

the tyre dealer wont care if your not insured, he would only care that they are safe and even though i'm sure youre right about them working perfectly, i would always put XL tyres on if they should be on there as standard (i have an LCR and dont know if LC's had them as standard) just to make sure the insurance company couldnt wriggle out of paying.

I have Kumo Ecsta XL tyres on my LCR. I recall they were around £280 for 4.
They seem to be quite good tyres but feel a little less grippy than the GSD3's I took off, but not enough to warrant spending the extra £150.
I am happy with them.

The critical thing here, as has been said, is the load rating of the tyre.

Leon's in general require a 91 load index

This means, for 225/40ZR18 tyres, you require the XL tyres.
For 225/45ZR17 the standard load tyre is a 91 load index, and so perfectly adequate. The XL in this size has a load rating of 94.

Therefore, LCR with 18" wheels does require XL tyres, the LC / FR with 17" wheels does not.

Can someone help me quickly?

Lots of debate on this, and generally its a good idea to have XL on 225/45/18 for the LCR.

My question - I have an FR+ with 225/45/17 which the above post states I wouln't need them. However the diesel lump is a dam site heavier than the 225 LCR lump. So XL on the FR+ or not.

I've ordered 4 new tyres and they've arrived however they are 225/45/17 91Y and I ordered 225/45/17 XL 94W. Leave it or get them to change them?

I know the speed rating is different but I don't do 150mph so W rated is fine for me.

Cheers
Steve

i have the cupra tdi , and was lead to believe we need Xtra loads , the guy who fitted my falkens wouldnt even jack both ends up the same time as he said it was quite a heavy car and would do one corner at a time,

Well Y is a higher speed rating than W, so that's not an issue.

You'll need to check the label on your car with all the tyre pressures on it for the correct load index, as from memory this also lists the correct Type Approved tyre fitment.

If you can't find that information go on the Michelin UK web site or similar and search by vehicle and it'll tell you. I can't look from where I am as Java's blocked.

If the load index of the tyres delivered is below that recommended then for sure send them back

Cheers for quick replies. Been on teh Michelin site and it states that i require 225/45/17 94W Re-inforced tyres so XL it is.

The tyres I have at the moment are 91Y the new ones 94W but like i said the lower speed rating isn't a problem, iM never going to do 150mph and 94W is what the fat man says so thats good enought for me.

The Standard fit p6000 on the FR+ are 91Y I've just put on a set of Vredestien Sessenta's which are 94W. The ride is firmer as you would expect because the side wall can take more weight. Grip well though only done 50 miles on them so far but much better than the OE rubbish Pirelli's

Just like to add to this, I ordered my tyres from Camskil (4x Avon ZV5's for those who are wondering) my brother uses them for his old school GTti a lot. Delivered the next day as promised, 30seconds on the phone to explain the problem, double checked my order, a big appology, collection of the wrong ones and the correct item sent should be here on Friday. Could not get any better service, a big pat on the back for Camskil and despite the minor hicup would recomend them for price and efficency.

Was just looking for some info on tyres & noticed this thread. It mentions the lcr but not the normal Lean Cupra - does anyone know if you need to use the XL tyres on the Leon Cupra too? if so the Good Year tyres that i was about to buy in 225/45/17 are not xl ones

Yes mate, I've recently had Good Year Eagle F1s fitted on mine. I originally didn't know what they were meant to be or even what speed index was!

After researching I discovered that XLs are required and i think mine are Y or Z (speed index)

i have a cupra 4 tdi (so even heavier than a std tdi 150), and the dealer told me that i didn't need XL tyres, and it didn't come with XL tyres when i bought it and it didn't come with XL tyres from the factory..
i have conti sport contact 3s @ 225/45 R17 94W, not XL versions and it's all fine.

you only need XL tyres on 18s

also, what michelins are you getting? PS2s? conti sport contact 3s are better, but they're both rather expensive. you can save quite a lot if you get eagle F1s or ultrac sessantas

well that would be down to the wanlis, rather than the fact they weren't XL.
pay 25p for a tyre, what do you expect?

like i said, i've been running conti 17s @91W and Y on a tdi 4 for a year, and have suffered no adverse effects as a result.

Bare in mind that the type approval for the 4WD model will not necessarily be the same as the front wheel drive - best advice is to go by what's on the tyre info sticker on the car, or refer to the handbook

Hi all, has anyone noticed any extra road noise with XLs vs standard tyre walls? A guy on a lexus forum covering this same topic suggested that XLs were much noisier.
