Tinted windows on my Mk4

After a short phone call to the insurance to advise them about the tinted windows on my car I got asked various questions, 2 of which were:

- Why have i had the 'modification' done?

- Will this add performance to the vehicle?

Now i appreciate these maybe standard set questions, but you'd think a little common sense wouldnt go a miss.....

you should have said you had them tinted for various reasons such as making your car harder to break into, making it safer in an accident and keeping prying eyes off your stuff, then when they ask about increased performance say the car will be slightly less powerful due to a very minimal increase in weight of the window (due to the film) and 50x harder to break into due to the film holding the glass together in an attempted break in!!

Armed with that info, say that now your car is a lot safer both in an accident and in an attempted break in its only fair they reduce your premium

£30.34 or something like that - i told them to save the quote! to be honest i dont think the bloke had a clue as he could hardly speak english. to the first answer i said i'd got it done for security, so i'll add the 'safety' aspect in there too. I think they dont need to know about the CC remap if its this much trouble for the windows. im only telling them as its a physical feature which you cant miss!!

i had my old car windows tinted i simply said i had them and they added it to my policy and didnt get any questions or price added on

didn't realise it bumped it up by that much!
was thinking of havin the rear windows dark smoked and the fronts light smoked, might not bother if it has an "annual running cost" of £30

i dont see the point in telling them about window tints if they are going to charge you, they may refuse to pay out if they feel they were a contributing factor to the crash but if they are on rear windows that would only maybe cause a problem "due to lack of visability" when reversing, but how many claims would go thru on a reversing accident?....due to the fact your doing about 5mph the damage wouldnt be worth claiming...unless you hit a bollard!

so there should be no problem not telling them

the only other thing they asked was if i had all of them done.... so after he'd asked those dumb questions i took nothing for granted and advised i hadn't got the windscreen tinted

you never know normally abroad the top and botom of windscreens are done along with the rest of the car

speaking from experience (last xmas), if you write your car off , when they come to value your car with regard to a pay out, they will not take any mod into account that isn't declared and will only give you the value of the standard car based on age, mileage, plus any mod that is declared!
i learnt the hard way! didn't get round to telling them i'd had a KentCam, followers, Vernier Pulley fitted the week before!
thats £500 i'll never see again!

i'd imagine this policy would also apply if it wasn't outside your house one morning!

if you haven't notified them of any modifications they will probably void your insurance anyway!
on the application iirc, it asks " are there any modifications to this car" and at the end of the form in the decleration, your are signing to declare that the information given is true & accurate!

i'd reccommend taking the cost of the premium increase into the price of any mod!

if the rims look standard they wont question replacing them not where i work anyway unless a 1.2 has got cupra rims ect

s*it mate that aint good (they looked great though im still tempted to get mine done after seeing urs! I just told my insurance bout the leon sat nav in the dash and the cd changer in the glove box and they were fine about it! However to make you feel better they would add 90quid if i fit a strut brace to the car!
