Just had a thought mike when you turn on the ignition does the battery light come on, along with all the normal dash lights?

Yep... looks to me like all the lights come on normally, just that the battery warning light does not go off. Why?

All hail to the great God SEAT!

Though from reading the article about VAG this week in Autocar, makes you quite wonder what's going to happen to SEAT!

Well this sensor wire on the alternator we have been talking about normally if this has broken then the battery light wont come on, when the ignition is switched on and then when the car is started the battery light will come on.

Thanks for that. Interesting... so in my case, as the light is on all the time, I'm assuming it's not that. O'well... shall be taking it into the garage first thing tomorrow morning, so I suppose I'll know the full story soon.

Ouch, they're not cheap (I remember getting quotes when I thought mine had gone).

Have they actually tested it and found a fault, or are they just assuming that's what the problem is ?

I'm assuming they've tested it! Though sounds like my extended warranty with Warranty Direct should cover it (though think I have to pay a £25 excess).

It's just coming up for 25k. So not many miles really! Only bought a diesel originally because I thought I was going to be continuing to do mega-miles like I had for the previous 15 years. Now "sort of" work from home, so hardly do any mileage these days.

That's OK then, so even if it was just the regulator you'll get a complete new alternator for 'free' :)

Well... finally picked it up at 4:30 this afternoon, was starting to sweat, as Warranty Direct were being a pain about authorising the work! Think they were confused because I got three years free servicing with the car and hence I had no Invoice for the services (sent direct to SEAT UK) though the service book was stamped up to date.

All appears OK now, warning light now goes out and volt meter reads 14V when engine starts.

Also... the heated rear window now works again. So my assumption that it won't work unless the alternator is charging the battery, appears correct. Something maybe worth taking note off.

I'm assuming they've fitted the correct one! It's a Valeo SG9B015 and from what I can find on the Internet, it looks to be a 90A one (as it should be). Though I did notice that the connector with the two small wires does not fit too well on the new alternator (IE. it does not "click" home on the connector). I can maybe see that working loose over time.

The garage would not tell me what the final bill was, I just had to pay the £25 excess under the Warranty cover. Though again from looking on the WEB, the only Price I could find for it was an almost UNBELIEVABLE £248! Good Good, are alternators really that expensive now.

All well the ends well I suppose.

Thanks for your input folks...
