Uh oh! Actuator stuck open (10 points to Goble)

Next step, anyone think of any reasons why it would be stuck open other than the wastegate being clogged or the actuator being broke? Going to detach the actuator arm from the wastegate in the morning to try and tell which of the two is sticking. Is there anything else i should be looking for while i'm there?

i have had seizing wastegate flapper on my turbo, which was metal pickup within the flappers shaft and bush that it runs in...

actuator should spring back in when you release the nuts

Cheers, if thats the case would i be able to clear the pick up by removing the downpipe and digging around?

right first count the amount of threads at the end of the actuator rod and note it down next undo the 10mm nut at the end of the actuator and see if it tries to go back in on its own if it does not then the actuator is knackered but if it does then try to move the wastegate arm up and down the thread. its either one or the other have you been running higher boost than standard or different fuel??? the internal wastegate flap could have heated up alot and warped just see what happens but when the actuator is off then the flap should move freely

nope, pickup is internal from flapper to its shaft out of the body thru the bush... presuming this is the problem on yours.

I have ihi housings which have cracked wastegate flapper hole and very oval distorted housings from excess heat.

it should move easily by hand when actuator is loosened

have you been running higher boost than standard or different fuel???

Been running REVO stage 1 (1.5bar peak) for quite a while now on normal fuel.

Took the nuts off today, 1st time the actuator pulled back in as normal (see pic) AND wastegate moves freely by hand Somethings a miss.

So put it back together and gave it all a wiggle, then took nuts off again, but this time the actuator did not spring back in (see pic) but wastegate still moved freely by hand. So this must be the cause right? (sticky actuator)

Had a poke around but can't really see how to get to the bolts to remove the actuator, would i be able to get to them from underneath the car or would it be a case of taking the turbo off to remove it?

The wastegate moves freely though by hand, its the actuator thats sticking. Surely no carbon can get in there. Torn diaphram maybe?

im having exact same problem right now.

Can someone explain, when activated is the rod supposed to move towards the turbo or the actuator?

Secondly, Is a vacuum supplied to the actuator or air blow pressure to activate it? Can sucking on it imitate the vacuum and move the rod or do u need a stronger vacuum?

rod pushes to open wastegate under pressure applied to back of actuator. spring pressure inside actuator hold the rod and wastegate flapper shut

On mine when the engine is not running i can push the rod back into the actuator (where vac pipes are) and it comes back out when i release it, is this the spring you spoke of bill and is this normal will get pics if required to explain.

I dont think you will be able to muster enough puff to blow it open from your lungs.

thats the spring you are pushing against yes. It needs "some" pre-tension onto the actuator flapper to hold it closed against manifold pressure.

Are these not the same symtoms as mine? If so is it definatly my actuator thats the problem?
