Hi,

My wife is keen on the new ibiza and looking to replace her current car (Clio 1.2 16v). She has a daily commute to Manchester, and monthly trips back home to Brum. She covers 12k miles per annum and wants a 5 door car.

So which one would you guys choose? The 1.2 or 1.4 petrol, or 1.4 TDI?
Performance wise, needs to be equal or better than her Clio and has to have AirCon.

I like the idea of the 1.4 TDI but not sure how it would feel compared to her Clio?

Aiming to keep the car 5yrs minimum.

Thanks in advance.
Goot :)

Yup TDI vote here too. Diesels make every day driving easier imo cos of the nice fat torque curve (well any high torque car really) meaning less cog swapping. Plus the added economy has got to be worth it

The 1.4 16v Sport is a great buy. Dirvethedeal.com is doing new UK sourced 3 door cars for £8300, a 5 door might even be less due to demand! The bhp is about the same as the Clio but its still very responsive.

My mate has just bought one and we did a 300 mile commute this weekend. I have to say, with the luxury packs, its a bargain!

Doesn't the 1.4 16v sport have 100bhp? If so then that's 25 more than her clio which should be noticable? I wouldn't bother with the 1.2 ( i've got one), apart from the cool sounding engine i'd rather have something quicker like the 1.4 sport.

We tested a 1.4 16v Sport (75bhp)

And I don't want anyone to take offence here - but it was quite possibly the most useless engine I've driven (ever)

quiet, smooth (there's a reason), comfy, reasonable spec

but absolutely nothing in the guts department

3rd gear, slight incline 3 up - WOT & nothing happened - so the smoothness is because there's no oomph

1.4PD all the way if the price is within £1500 you'll break even & it'll be worth more at reslae

I am glad you had the guts to say that we had our 1.4 sport six months and agree with everything you have said

I drove a 1.4, don't know if it was a sport or not, and it was slower than my 1.2 (just) and experienced what you did mork, just put it down to it having less than 1000 miles on the clock (courtesy car). Was a lot better specced than mine tho.

Another Derv fan, the 1.4 TDi will feel quicker than the current motor, and you could always remap it :p

My A2 has the 1.4 TDI 3-pot lump in it, and I have to say it's a great engine for what it is - punchy and returns great economy, plus it's pleasant to drive. Yup, it can be remapped also to get more grunt, and under acceleration makes quite a gutsy burble :p I'm also on the variable servicing so go 30,000 miles between services.

As m0rk's said, choosing the diesel will also be well worth it come resale.

The 1.4TDi is quite nippy especially when remapped and will return about 60+mpg with a lower insurance bracket and higher resale. Ive got no doubt that itll be quicker than the 1.4 16v - they just scream and scream but dont seem to go anywhere in my experience.

I know it's not like for like but the Hyundai 3 pot diesel is a pile of poo

my dad has a gets 1.3 petrol and the 1.5 3 pot diesel was a courtesy car

what a load of junk, talk about lumpy, the whole car shakes when you engage the clutch

although it did sound a bit different

theres 3 1.4 engines the now... 75bhp - 85 bhp (ive got it) and the 100 bhp which tends to be in the sport dab, i had a 1.6 astra twinport with catback scorpion and air filter and theres no much diffence through the revs, top end is obviously slightly less, but it goes quicker than i thought it would

The feedback I was after, cheers everyone. Keep it coming, all appreciated.
Performance isn't really an issue (afterall she only has a 1.2 16v) but what I don't want to do is get another 1.2/1.4 and find the car slower.

I think the Clio is a little underpowered at times, but she's happy with it.

I'll book some test drives after Xmas. What might have been a possible couple days decision is going to take some time I think.

Goot :)
