Problems with 130tdi

I'm having problems with my 130TDi, at around 1600-1800 revs if you keep the revs constant then the engine seems to judder (a bit like a misfire). It feels as if there's some cr@p in the fuel lines or something - If I put my foot back on the gas then it is okay again. It's fine at idle too. I've taken it to VW a couple of times (it's a Passat by the way) and they can't find anything wrong :(

Not knowing anything about engines I've no idea what it could be so was wondering if this sounded familiar to any other tdi owners?

I've never experienced it myself, but I wonder if this is Ye Olde MAF sensor problem....
The dealer will only look for stored fault codes, but I believe when MAF (Mass Airflow Sensors) go, they don't flag a fault but lead to hesitation.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

If you know someone with vag-com (sure there's one or two in your area...) then they could log the MAF reading vs engine speed, that's the way to know if it's faulty.

Or pull the connector off the MAF, hope a fault light comes on, drive it to VW and they should replace the MAF. That's one way of knowing ;)

It's a 54 plate (Jan '05) and is now on 38k miles. Do you know which age of car suffered this problem?

Doesn't matter regarding age really as it is a common problem. Some cars never suffer problems with the MAF others a plagued with problems. As Lee says you need to log the maf readings to diagnose if it is faulty properly, stick a post in the vagcom section and some kind person may jump to your aid.

The reason I asked about age is that I seem to recall some newer engines suffering from some kind of hesitation problems ?

it's not the maf imho.

is the car mapped or has a powerbox or something? this sort of problems is usually cos of overfueling. or the tranny suffering too much torque anyway. I got it on mine since day one and it's not a prob really cos I learnt to drive around it.

if the car is not modded it could be the dual mass flywheel on its way out I don't know,,, in this case you just go to the dealer, tell them you've been told that it's the dmf cos a million other people had the same problem on the net [you liar!! ;) ] and that if the dmf fails when you're driving the transmission will block causing you to crash and you will sue their asses in that case,,, they should be pretty willing to give you a new dmf in that case :D

No, it's totally standard. Got it booked in at VW tomorrow morning so will see what they say. Hopefully they will see the symptoms this time and then they can't deny that there's something wrong. I'm just scouring forums/threads to print off anything that might explain the problem so that it gives them an idea.

Last time I took it in they reckoned it was a brake light switch that was doing it. Can't see how that would cause the stuttering but hey, what do I know....

If the driver presses the brake pedal, the ECU cuts engine power (try it...).
While I doubt it's causing your particular problem, if you had a duff brake switch it could indeed cause problems...

Once they changed the switch the car ran great for a couple of journeys, however it soon went back to the stuttering. So I wonder if the reset to the ECU got rid of whatever was making it stutter for a while until it started again....

I just went out to try to recreate it so that I know it will definitely be happening when I take it in tomorrow. For a while it wasn't really doing it, but then I took it up to the redline in 3rd and after that is seemed to start.....

Both the latest PD130 and PD140 16v (especially on Octavias for some reason) are said to suffer with this slight hesitation and sensation of it 'missing' like a petrol would. But then my colleagues V50 2.0D Volvo with the PSA-Ford lump in does it too! Perhaps it is a Euro 4 thing! lol

So would Joyrider's car (54 plate, Jan 05) be affected ?

If not, I still reckon it could be a duff sensor, either the MAF or MAP ?

If it was the brake switch, I don't know why it would only happen at certain revs, surely it would affect the car under all conditions...

Well I'm going to VW in about 15 minutes so when I'm back I'll post what they have said (so long as the problem is happening when I get there)...I'll be sure to mention the MAF along with a few other things I've found while browsing for this problem...

Well that was a waste of time, the problem decided not to happen when I took it in, so they have basically said take it in there when it is happening. Great... :(
