Hmmm i don't know about the backpressure side of things, the folks on tdiclub seem to be of the impression that the turbo itself provides back pressure - how correct that is i don't know as i'm no mechanic. I ended up fitting a small powerflow silencer in place of the OEM backbox after a week as it was just too noisy.

Like you i've NO complaints about the sound(s)

I too have heard that the turbo inselfs creates enough back pressure, but also heard it wouldnt, so rather than finding out the hard way, I figure keep the cat

I can't stress this enough, at tickover and in traffic / around town it is NO more noisy than a stock exhaust ... but once you plant it it sounds lovely. The turbo chatter ( if that's what it is) between gears is lovely

so what system did you get in the end to make it sound how it does now?

Ok here goes;

powerflow stainless pipe to replace the cat
powerflow stainless pipe to replace backbox

then pipe removed and smallest powerflow silencer added

kept powerflow 6x4 oval at the back

End result and 200 quid later as you see / hear

Or.....

Just go to a exhaust place, and tell them to chop the muffler out, and replace with a straight through pipe and tip for £90

Either way we're still way better off than if we'd gone the blueflame / miltek route hehe

I have the full Milltek on my car, and IMHO it sounds absolutly wicked, went for the race cat and non resonated sound, and boy does it sound the nuts. Turbo whistles when idleing, and when you open it up, the turbo chatter on my 3rd hybrid turbo wow is all i can say especially driving home, the turbo screams as its bouncing off the houses around my estate

Hehe don't get me wrong, if i had the money i'd probably have gone for a full system - but for what i spent, what I got does the job and sounds much better than stock. When the rest of the mild steel falls off i'll simply replace it with 2.5" stainless pipe from turbo back to rear silencer. I think you should record yours and pop a linky to it here

Thinking of doin this few question though,
does improve performance?
does it effect insurance? (ie. declare or not to declare)
and finally can any exhaust place do this?

Cat and backbox are restrictive, backbox more so than the cat. I found with both off it would rev more freely.

It may release a couple of bhp so it may affect insurance.

Any competent exhaust place can do it - you're simply replacing the cat and or backbox with a piece of straight pipe.

If you're leaving the cat in place but just removing the backbox I don't see any reason to inform the insurance as your car would be cheaper to repair.

If you do it, just make sure you get them to extend the tailpipe so it clears the rear bumper.

Also I Custom Pipes & Rims Doncaster quoted me £110 for my exhaust for any SC.N user... tho I dont think it would be worth the trip
