I still have the standard Aura HU and 6 disc glovebox changer at the minute.

I need a HU with ipod connectivity though so am looking to go for the Alpine 9850RI as this has a full speed ipod ipod connection.

I did consider just buying a seat ipod interface cable but the fucntions seem pretty limited plus they retail for around £100. I can get the Alpine HU for about £160 delivered and it has full functionality (artist, album search etc.) and much better sound quality i'm told. the only drawback is that there is only one pre out. Nevertheless, all in all i reckon the extra 60 bangers for the alpine HU is worth it.

I have the ipod FM modulator at the minute but it's pretty poor in terms of sound quality.

hope this info is of use to you.

Becker are very simple, high end head units. Super sound quality, no gimmicks and flashing lights or animated displays or anything, just pure audio :)

Latest range contain a built in Bluetooth hands free unit and the highest end unit has navigation too :)

Very high end, high quality units aimed at people that want superb sound quality above all else.

Oh, also handy to know they look very OEM and come in colours matching VAG dash colours :)

blimey! the main drawback i can find, after a quick google, is that they are not cheap!!!!

Think I'll stick to my original plan of the Alpine 9850RI.

Yeah, cheap is certainly not something you can call them unfortunately

Having said that, second hand units fetch a good price, and as far as I know Becker can service any of their past units and restore them to as new condition, all for a very reasonable price.

But still, the Alpine unit you mention is superb, so might be easier to go for that

£300! ouch

still looks like a nice stereo!

do you know what other aftermarket changers will fit in the glovebox if i were to take the standard one out?

Glovebox changer eh? Sounds interesting - a lot easier than a boot changer anyway.

For those that have them, would you recommend getting the changer, or getting an entirely new unit that'll do MP3s etc? I haven't had my Leon long but the stereo pales in comparison to my crappy old 306 (like many things unfortunately) and it's finally starting to grate a little.

I'm sure some of my gripes are easily fixed (need to do a thorough check of the manual) but the sound is average, the track seek is appalling and it's a bit of a pain keep having to change CDs.

The reason I've kept my standard one in is (as mentioned elsewhere on here) that when I changed the tape player in my old Leon the airbag light came on and defied all attempts to be put back off. I'm not risking that again without good reason ! Though I'd like a MP3 player in my car, I just hook the iPod up through a radio transmitter.

D'oh! I think I'll stay well clear then, thanks.

Tempted by to get an fm transmitter thingy, but I'm not sure I fancy leaving it in the car.

Well mine is about the same size as my iPod - tiny! You can either take it in the house or pop it in the glovebox - if your Leon is like mine inside there's a space by the right knee that's fairly hidden and I suppose you could put it there.

I did have a tape player in my old Leon, and it was a 51 plate - besides I've never heard of it happening to anyone else so maybe it was unrelated (just totally coincidental) or a freak happening.

Got an Aura unit in my Cupra and I'm happy with it as previous owner replaced the speakers with decent OE replacements ... but would like to link my IPOD up to it without losing the CD Changer ...

Can this be done?

blizeh, don't be too put off mate; loadsa off people have changed their HUs with no faults. I had 4 different units in my old leon, and have had 2 different ones in my LCR (trying to keep up with technology!) and not had any faults. The airbag light will come on if the on/off switch is unplugged in the glovebox (if you have the glovebox out for routing cables) but can be reset via vagcom or unplugging your car battery for a while.

Nice one, cheers Danny! I'll definitely give it some consideration then; an MP3 CD player would be a dream, although I may just get an iTrip thing and use that.

Shame you can't get a tiny one of these - would be ideal if you could get one that'd fit nicely when the compartment is closed!
