Cam Belt Help....

My Cupra is a 2001 with 36k miles....

I have read in the service book and it states that the cam belt should be inspected at 60k and changed at 120k??? Or is it changed at 60k and again at 120k??

As my car is 5yrs old but does not have 60k miles on it where do I stand as the service book states nothing regarding age????

How much do Seat charge for cambelt change? Anyone reconmend some cheaper alternatives around the north Hampshire area?

Is a task that could be done myself (considering the girfriends dad has a four poster ramp and all the tools in the world on his farm)

It really depends on what you want to do really! I had mine checked at 50,000 miles and replaced at 60,000 miles (along with a Water Pump with Metal Impellors as it works out cheaper that way)

They say to get it done at either 60,000 miles or every 5 years which would work out right if you were doing the average 12,000 miles a year

I paid £405 for a 60,000 miles Service, Cambelt, Tensioners & Water Pump and i think about £150 of that was for the Service so the rest was for the other bits

IIRC SEAT quoted me about £457 for doing to the whole lot although i suppose that depends if there is other things need doing too

As the service book quotes just on mileage where would I stand if it broke at 45k miles for example? Where is it written "60k miles/5 years which ever is sooner" as it does in some service books?

I really dont know? Have you got Warranty?

Im just going from things i have read on here and experience really! Im not saying anything is fact but as far as i know they say every 5 years is a good guideline to go on

I suppose the only reason I worry is that I used to have a Clio 172 and I heard some story's of peoples cam belts going before the reconmended change interval (although in most cases Renault paid for reapir as if your service books states a certain mileage then then if it goes before then its not an end user problem as such)

Have there been any cases that you know of where a belt has snapped before the 60k mark?

I think its just one of those things! Its like one person having two MAFs go and another person having none! You either take the chance or you dont, i suppose it depends how much its going to worry you?

I think there has been a case or two that i have read about on here

Have a searchy on 'Cambelts' or something like that as there should be some more information

For a petrol engine the official line is check it every 20K from 60K onwards and replace if required, but it must be replaced by 120K. But as others have said for peace of mind (especially as your car is 5 years old) get it changed sooner rather than later and consider the waterpump at the same time.

With a car your age if the belt should snap i doubt SEAT would pay up even though it has not reached the mileage they state it should survive to, unless you really pushed them hard with legal back up.

i agree get it done, and if your not sure get a garage to do it.

i changed one on my old car, dealer part using dealer tools to easly above dealer standard, the B#####d snapped on me two days later, dodgy cam belt but the garage would sort it because i fitted it. oh well, only was 400 quid for new complete head, gasget and vvc unit.

That seems pretty good to me! I paid £405 with the 60,000 mile Service in there too

I got quoted 250 by Seat as well for cambelt and pump change, with me supplying the pump.

Not really, id like to keep the service schedule to be done rite on 50k like the cars history but an extra £90 for a service does sound good!

Does anyone have part numbers for the belt and other parts (tensioners/pulleys)??
