New CUPRA Terramar full details

CUPRA has now a full-fledged product portfolio with the launch of CUPRA Terramar. The sporty SUV will move the company upmarket into the hotspot of the fastest growing segment in Europe.

Exterior design

Hitting the hotspot of the SUV segment, the CUPRA Terramar is a highly emotional, sporty SUV that embraces CUPRA’s new DNA. It delivers a vehicle that stands out from the crowd with distinctive styling.

The CUPRA Terramar pays homage to the historic racing circuit (Autòdrom de Sitges-Terramar) where the brand was born back in 2018.

Sporty proportions give the CUPRA Terramar its impulse with proportions that help it stand out – the CUPRA Terramar is 1,584mm tall, 1,863mm wide, 4,519mm long and with a wheelbase of 2,681mm.

From the front, the face of CUPRA Terramar presents a powerful vehicle characterised by its shark nose.

The CUPRA Terramar uses the brand’s new signature with three triangles – with CUPRA Matrix LED Ultra, with High-Definition Technology – that define the Terramar as a high-end vehicle. The CUPRA logo is framed by two lines that also add sculpture and dynamism to the surfaces of the long bonnet and emphasise the vehicle’s proportions.

The front exterior design is extenuated as the grille gives way to the performance-oriented functional lower mouth, suggestive of sports cars.

The sporty proportions skip from the front of the SUV to the side, with sweeping lines that shift from the front across the side to heighten the SUV’s sense of performance.

The CUPRA Terramar’s proportions are reinforced by the wheels available in 18”, 19” and 20” options.

As the eye moves to the CUPRA Terramar’s rear design, its wide proportions give the SUV a strong presence, with the integrated and illuminated CUPRA logo positioned centrally between the rear lights along with the Terramar name illuminated. The rear diffuser contrasts with the other elements of the design helping to lighten its proportions, giving it a defiant character.

The CUPRA Terramar will be available in nine exterior colours, including two matt optionsCentury Bronze Matt* and Enceladus Grey Matt. The palette is completed by the Dark Void – inspired by the plasma colour of the CUPRA DarkRebel Showcar, Fjord Blue, Glacial White, Cosmos Blue, Timanfaya Grey, Midnight Black and Graphene Grey.

Interior design

Before entering the CUPRA Terramar, the driver and passengers are greeted with the welcome ceremony, with a dynamic light ceremony in the front and rear illumination of the car, while also projecting the CUPRA logo onto the ground, the CUPRA lettering in front of the car (i.e. on a wall or a garage door) and an illuminated doorstep.

Inside, the CUPRA Terramar’s highly emotional character transfers into the SUV’s interior. The driver-oriented interior centres the driver as the main protagonist. As the first contact elements, the standard CUPRA steering wheel with paddles and satellite buttons maximises control, while standard bucket seats provide the ultimate in dynamism.

From there, all elements around the driver take shape under the emotional design language of CUPRA, with its interplay of dynamic lines and progressive surfaces. This is particularly relevant in the centre console, with a sculptural spine that flows around the functional elements. The spine incorporates a 3D parametric pattern design which can also be found on the structural parts of the dashboard, bringing that unexpected and progressive CUPRA attention to detail.

Digitalisation is at the centre of the driver’s focus. A new and improved HMI is implemented in the digital cockpit behind the steering wheel as well, as in the 12.9’’ infotainment system with a retro-illuminated slider. The experience is augmented by the Windscreen Head-up Display that delivers information directly in the driver’s line of sight.

The infotainment system comes with an improved App Bar, widgets, and Clima Bar for an easy-to-use user interface. It’s all about simplicity, personalisation, and cutting-edge design. Climate control is now seamlessly integrated on the button of the main unit’s screen, joining the digital and physical interactions.

In the CUPRA Terramar’s interior, performance joins design though perfect ergonomics. The high position of the centre screen, the wrapping shapes of the seats or the padded side surfaces of the centre console for the best leg support, are some examples of this. Also, purpose meets technology with the use of innovative sustainable materials, with a selection of choices that mix style, sportiness, recycled and renewable materials.

Three interior characters – Deep Ocean, Moon Light and High Canyon – enhance the cabin’s feel.

The dark blue Deep Ocean brings together PVC bucket seats that contain in its central area a textile created from 100% upcycled SEAQUAL® YARN which is made from marine plastics retrieved from beaches, oceans, estuaries and seas.

Sustainability is also part of the dark grey Moon Light interior. Dinamica seats contain in its central area at least 73% recycled textile derived from PET plastics and clothing.

While the dark burgundy High Canyon trim covers the bucket seats in leather that uses a plant-based tanning process.

All the seating options include the embossed CUPRA logo in the headrest and copper stitching, matched to the copper surrounds in the air vents, door mouldings, and decorative inserts, subtle details that reinforce the CUPRA look and feel of the interior space.

Interior lighting creates an incredible level of character to the CUPRA Terramar’s interior. Smart lights in the dashboard, backlit door panels front and rear merge to create a unique ambience.

The CUPRA Terramar also offers maximum practicality with the option of sliding the rear seats, increasing the luggage compartment capacity to 602 litres (when loaded up to the height of the rear seat backrests).

Powertrain

The CUPRA Terramar brings together the possibilities of combustion and electrification to deliver a range of powertrain options that give the driver a choice of performance that suits their requirements.

Five different powertrains across three different technologies provide several options and give the CUPRA Terramar strong driving dynamics. TSI (petrol), eTSI (mild hybrid), and the new generation of plug-in hybrid (eHybrid) engines produce from 150PS to 272PS.

CUPRA Terramar is exclusively equipped with a DSG dual-shift gearbox, no matter the powertrain option.

eTSI (mild hybrid)

The entry to the CUPRA Terramar line-up is the mild hybrid (eTSI) unit, injecting the efficiency of 48V mild-hybrid technology with the 1.5 litre 150PS (110kW) petrol engine. Mated exclusively in combination with the 7-speed DSG transmission, it’s a combination that delivers high efficiency.

The system uses a 48V starter-generator and 48V lithium-ion battery setup, delivering greater control over powertrain, giving the CUPRA Terramar the ability to coast with the engine switched off during some driving scenarios, recover energy under braking and supporting the engine with some electric assistance.

TSI (petrol)

Performance is central to the two 2.0 litre TSI petrol engine options available.

The first one, with an output of 204PS (150kW), is linked to a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive (4Drive) allowing the CUPRA Terramar to optimise the transfer of power to the road.

The second TSI unit pushes up the power output and is available in the CUPRA Terramar VZ variant. VZ stands for Veloz in Spanish, meaning quick or fast, a seamless way to describe the most powerful versions the CUPRA range.

The CUPRA Terramar VZ’s unit delivers 265PS (195kW), also linked to a 7-speed DSG gearbox and all-wheel drive (4Drive), giving it the purest of performance and dynamics.

eHybrid (plug-in hybrid)

The CUPRA Terramar embraces electrification, using it to stimulate a new sensation, taking the driver further. The new generation plug-in hybrid powertrain, boosts performance and delivers a wide electric-only range, proving once again that electrification and performance are a perfect match.

The new CUPRA Terramar houses two next generation eHybrid options: 204PS (150kW) and a 272PS (200kW) VZ version.

The 1.5 TSI engine is linked to an electric motor combined with a large battery pack that offers 19.7kWh (net) capacity. It means the new CUPRA Terramar can travel for more than 70 miles on a single charge – the perfect balance for eco-conscious journeys. The battery is fast charge compatible at up to 50kW (DC charge) while on the road, or at home using a 11kW wallbox.

Chassis

Matching powertrain performance with dynamism is a core element of the CUPRA Terramar’s character. Based on the MQB Evo architecture, the CUPRA Terramar offers a unique driving experience.

The front MacPherson struts and rear multilink suspension setup together with the sport suspension (10mm lower than the platform) – standard for all versions – allowed the engineering team to precisely tune the spring and damper rates, perfecting weight distribution.

Standard progressive steering controls the feedback and assistance depending on speed to maximise agility and give the driver feedback and control.

The CUPRA Terramar uses an electrical brake booster to provide a faster response and the ability to recover braking energy through the blending function (specific for the plug-in hybrid versions of the CUPRA Terramar) bolstering efficiency even further while also delivering better active security. The electrical brake booster has been specifically adapted for the CUPRA models.

The CUPRA Terramar takes confidence inspiring handling to another level with vehicles fitted with the 4Drive all-wheel drive system. The system constantly monitors a multitude of data including steering angle, wheel speed and yaw of the vehicle to deliver power to the correct wheel exactly when it is needed.

Chassis tunability is the backbone of CUPRA’s chassis capabilities. The CUPRA Terramar comes with a new generation of the Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), with two-valve shock absorbers, improving driving dynamics significantly.

The CUPRA Terramar introduces front uprights with higher camber providing more lateral grip and speed while cornering. The car also integrates a new control arm at the front axle with optimised elastokinematics for a more direct steering response and greater turnability.

The CUPRA Terramar’s character can be tuned with different driving modes: Comfort, Performance, CUPRA (for VZ versions), Offroad (for all-wheel drive versions), and Individual profiles, giving the CUPRA Terramar a huge breadth of abilities and character specific to the driver. ESC can be tuned to Sport for all powertrains, and in the case of the VZ versions (2.0 TSI 265PS & eHybrid 272PS), the ESC can even be disconnected (ESC Off).

The CUPRA Terramar comes as standard with either 18’’ wheels with 235mm tyres (1.5 eTSI 150PS, 2.0 TSI 204PS & eHybrid 204PS) or 19’’ wheels with 255mm wider tyres (VZ 2.0 TSI 265PS & VZ eHybrid 272PS). And as an option, the CUPRA Terramar can be equipped with 20’’ wheels with 255mm wider tyres to enhance the experience at the wheel.

Finally, the CUPRA Terramar VZ (2.0 TSI 265PS & eHybrid 272PS) can be equipped with Akebono performance brakes. The six piston calipers combine with bigger perforated disc brakes (375x36mm) compared to standard options (340x36mm), to improve braking performance, giving even greater confidence in the SUV’s dynamics.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The CUPRA Terramar offers a unique experience at the wheel of the car. It uses high-resolution screens to deliver all the information the driver and other occupants need, a next-generation high-fidelity audio system and access to the CUPRA ecosystem with the new My CUPRA App.

Behind the CUPRA steering wheel is a 10.25” digital cockpit, making digital delivery of key information clearer and simpler, augmented by the Windscreen Head-up Display that delivers information directly in the driver’s line of sight.

At the centre, the standard 12.9” central infotainment is designed to put everything at your fingertips. With renovated hardware and more powerful software, the customisable display mixes the benefits of touchscreen inputs with a retro illuminated slider bar to adjust interior climate and volume. And with the ability to include configurable widgets, the infotainment system can be dialled into individual needs.

The Wireless Full Link system allows customers to bring their wider digital lives into the cabin, whether that’s mapping, music or other automotive compatible functionality through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And, importantly, all of it is accessible in a controlled, intuitive, safe manner through the new CUPRA Terramar’s new Human Machine Interface (HMI).

And when mobile smart devices need a charge the new CUPRA Terramar offers wireless fast-charging capabilities of up to 15W, with refrigerated technology.

The CUPRA Terramar continues the collaboration with the audio experts of Sennheiser Mobility, introducing a new optional high-fidelity 12-speaker sound system. The high-powered 390W, powered by Sennheiser’s Concerto algorithms with AMBEO technology, immerses the driver and the passengers in a unique sound experience. The Sennheiser AMBEO technology carefully distils the fundamental components of music, including different instruments and room information, redistributing them throughout the car while preserving the music’s creative intention. This sound system delivers the pure signature Sennheiser sound, created based on the long-term Sennheiser experience providing artists and music professionals with trusted sound solutions.

With the My CUPRA App customers have complete control over their vehicle, (with additional functionality available for eHybrid versions of the new CUPRA Terramar), able to control climatisation remotely, manage battery charging and remote locking and unlocking as well as a host of other functionality.

Connectivity isn’t only about convenience; the embedded SIM adds improved safety too as users benefit from the eCall service. If an accident occurs the vehicle can directly contact the emergency services either manually or automatically. And should the worst happen, the vehicle can relay important data including car position, engine type, and number of passengers making it easier for them to assist.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and Safety

The CUPRA Terramar offers a wide range of safety and convenience features to deliver assurance no matter what happens. A suite of technologies integrated to aid but not interfere make the sporty SUV one of the safest and most convenient vehicles in the segment.

Among the new CUPRA Terramar’s safety and convenience systems are Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Travel Assist, Side and Exit Assist, Emergency Assist and Attention and Drowsiness Assist.

Terramar Travel Assist technology video

The Predictive ACC system can position the vehicle based on route and GPS data delivered from the navigation system, allowing it to correct its speed depending on the road layout ahead – bends, roundabouts, junctions, speed limits and built-up areas. And using input from the front-mounted camera and traffic sign recognition, it can adjust vehicle speed when limits change.

The Travel Assist combines a lane centre guidance with the ACC to actively keep the vehicle in the centre of the lane and adjust the speed to the flow of the traffic – over the entire speed range.

Side and Exit Assist technology detects what your eyes can’t with blind spot detection and adds an Exit Warning when you’ve parked and want to leave the vehicle, giving an acoustic and visual caution if someone or something is approaching.

Emergency Assist gets activated when there is no reaction from the driver. The system can initiate acoustic warnings and braking jolts to alert the driver, being able to completely stop the vehicle. Once stopped, the new CUPRA Terramar can directly contact the emergency services using the eCall system.

The Attention and Drowsiness Assist alerts the driver with acoustic and visual warnings when distracted or exhausted, making sure the driver remains focused on driving.

The range of advanced driver assistance systems is strengthened with the integration of seven airbags, including a standard front-central airbag. The mix of technologies creates an incredible level of safety without interfering with the driver’s experience.

The CUPRA Terramar takes lighting into the safety and convenience sphere with its CUPRA Matrix LED Ultra, with High-Definition Technology. It not only lights the road but also illuminates information onto the tarmac ahead of the driver for even greater safety and awareness.

The CUPRA Matrix LED Ultra with High-Definition Technology works to deliver advanced functionality, projecting important information onto the road ahead, whether it’s warnings about proximity to the vehicle in front or weather warnings.

The advanced system works in conjunction with other onboard sensors to illuminate the road, offering warnings to the driver for lane departure, roadworks, snow and ice, distance to the vehicle ahead, blind spot and indicating.

Finally, the CUPRA Terramar includes an advanced “Pre-Crash” Occupant Protection System as an option, which can react to prepare the car for a potential crash based on the vehicle dynamics, and also the front and rear radars’ information.

VZ 265 looks interesting :p I would only add Sennheiser and digital pack. Reading that article, some colours are missing from configurator and you can't spec 19" tires on VZ.

"Standard progressive steering controls the feedback and assistance depending on speed to maximise agility and give the driver feedback and control."

It's not good that Cupra's own press material has incorrect/missing information.

Speed-dependent steering assistance is a feature that the car may or may not have.
But progressive steering is something entirely different where the gears have different ratio at the left & right extremes of the rack than the center section of it, instead of having a constant gear ratio all through the rack.

Spanish are still lagging behind major car-manufacturing countries when it comes to details like this.
