Although this fault is fixed, I'll share my experience for others to note so how to fault find in the future.
So, there I was, travelling through Glasgow when I struck a pretty deep pothole, camouflaged by a puddle. The car started to cough and splutter, then stalled with the dash lighting up like Blackpool illuminations.
Resulted damage:
...and a car which refused to start.
What next? VCDS Scan revealed a few faults
What do the faults show? The engine won't start as the immobiliser is cutting the fuel and there is no connection to other modules in the car.
Why is the immobiliser kicking in? Somethings loose with the wiring behind the dash. The looms for all interior electrics meet at the bulkhead behind the clocks through various amounts of plugs. The immobilser in the cluster can't read the key so cuts fuel to the engine.
How can I fix it? Time for a roadside strip down...
I had a feel and play with the wiring and the ignition on. Pushing the loom would turn some dash lights on and pulling the loom would turn lights off, something's not quite sitting correctly
After an hour of wire and relay testing, I find the issue...
The arrowed white plug had worked loose and was balancing in the holder. It's the same plug I had originally removed when installing Cruise Control last year. A swift push and it clicked into place.
Result? All running and no faults found on VCDS!
Lesson Learnt? WHEN INSTALLING ANYTHING ON THE CAR, ENSURE I DO IT CORRECTLY FIRST TIME AND SECURE ANY CONNECTORS I FIDDLE WITH
